Another Metro clash as the rebuilding Rangers visit.

Eetu Luostarinen will make his NHL debut as Erik Haula deals with some knee pain. We’ll see where he slots in at the morning skate. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Reimer in goal tonight.

The Rangers are coming off a 5-1 win over Detroit last night. That brought them to NHL .500 with 13 points in 13 games. Greg McKegg had his first, a shorty And the Breadman had his team leading 7th goal. Buchnevich and Strone each have 8 assists. Kappa Kakko has 3 goals, 2 assists but is -11. Adam Fox has 1 goal and is averaging almost 17 minutes per game, including 2 minutes per game on the PP. King Henrik played last night so expect Geogiev in goal tonight. He carries a 2.87/.913 stat line. The Rangers are 12th on the PP at 20.8% and tied for 20th on the kill at 80.4%

Amen. Our D has been under some severe pressure lately. Need a complete team game to right the ship. PP is still their Achilles Heal. Fix that and you get some breathing room during the game.
 
The Rangers have been roughly as expected this season. Competent as a baseline, occasionally dangerous and occasionally fairly awful. About what you normally get from NHL .500 teams in the middle of their rebuild/re-loads. Carolina on the other hand has gotten roughly the anticipated results, but haven't hit anything like their stride offensively. It's a weird feeling matchup, to be honest. New York has generally played better against better opposition ... with wins over Nashville, Tampa and Buffalo (given their start, I guess they qualify) thus far. There's plenty of reason for Carolina to take this one seriously.

The matchup basics sound really familiar for the modern NHL ... New York is a top heavy team in terms of offense, but their twist is that they get good goaltending behind a fairly shabby defense. A combined save percentage of .907 given the number of quality chances faced by their keepers is fairly remarkable, honestly. And the Canes have reverted somewhat back to that metrics darling/reality frustration of a team ... creating chances by the boat load, but finishing a sparse few of those chances. We keep talking about them getting back to their possession game, but honestly ... burying a few shots and getting some confidence back as shooters of the puck might be the bigger issue at this point. Not everything has to be such a slog, and if you actually light the lamp a few times it covers a world of sins.

So ... go. Score some goals. Create some "woos" and build some momentum in the offensive zone. Even with Huala out, there's still the bones of two pretty good scoring units and by NHL standards, that's plenty. Do the thing.

You simply cannot lose three straight to less talented Metro foes and expect to be a big dog in the division. I expect a more complete effort tonight and frankly there is no reason whatsoever that the Canes should not have the legs to out skate a team that just played last night when you are at home and rested up. A loss of any kind tonight will feel like all that early season momentum is out the window.

Well, you CAN ... but that would mean you're leaving yourself a lot of ground to make up when the schedule is less favorable. I mean, that IS the Hurricanes' way, after all. The only season in NC where they didn't bumble through either October or November was 2005-06.

Canes were 3-3 with McCauley and 1-3 with Pollock. Rangers were 2-2 and 4-2. Fournier is a rookie, working on a split AHL/NHL contract. He was full time in the ECHL last year. Tonight is his 7th game.

Hmm, it really helps if your body is used to move people out of the net area rather than trying to hold their sticks down With your stick.
 
The canes need a coach for the following areas
skating
stick handling, passing and catching
defense in front of the net
scoring
generating traffic in front of the oppositions net
