2019-20 Miscellaneous NHL/Hockey News Thread

There are different levels of kicking and punching. Some would warrant firing some would not.

I think he created a toxic environment in general and I’m glad he’s gone. Funny how we were belittled for not being able to keep such a “great coach”.
I mean, yes. I think we can all see in retrospect that Peters lost the room and never got it back, so there's other factors at play that just the acts themselves. Based on my own experience I would say that a coach who would lose control and lash out physically at a player is simply not the kind of coach who is going to do the kind of job you need with a young, developing roster.

And this is just yet another object lesson in the basic fact that the hockey media at large doesn't know its butt from a hole in the ground. Carolina was supposedly stupid and cheap to hire Brind'Amour, and disrespectful to fire Francis, and borderline insane to let a coach like Peters walk. Yeah ... how's that all looking now?

It's looking more and more like someone who knew a lot more about the situation, and listened to exit interviews, etc, did what needed to be done and flushed the damned toilet!

Yeah ... that was the end result. And the NHL certainly can benefit from time to time from an outsider's very simple perspective when it comes to some of this stuff. What is obvious to a business manager who didn't grow up in "hockey culture" is less clear to those who did sometimes.

That said, Dundon still played games with the thing and waited for Peters to leave on his own terms. I'd have put a boot in his butt.

Karmanos quite possibly forgot completely about Francis mentioning the Peters incident, but more likely Francis just told Karmanos that the players raised a concern about Peters conduct and Francis took care if it. He might not have told Karmanos the details.

I think Francis keeps his job partly because they are not playing yet.

Peters will likely end up as an AHL assistant after he takes a year or 2 off.

The more people, like Friesen, that were around the Canes and Peters and discuss how bad he is/was the worse it will get for Francis.

Francis is going to have a hard time explaining why he gave Peters a contact extension after knowing about the physical altercations. Best case, Francis looks completely out of touch as Peters had already lost the lockeroom when Francis extended him. Worst case, Francis was completely negligent in dealing with team issues and may get caught in a lie.

It's no mystery that I hate Bill Peters, and glad he's not our problem. Same with Francis as a GM. I just hope the lies, drama, etc fall short of coming back to our current group. Francis, Karmanos and Peters all belong out of hockey.

Pete Friesen offers his opinion of Peters

Absolute train wreck, what a legacy he left in the game of hockey. What happens to a person who can’t handle a position of power. https://t.co/1A7ysqEXU4
BTW ... Francis should be happy that Friesen has yet to offer up his opinion of Ron Francis' job performance as GM. I've heard it ... it ain't pretty.

Francis let Friesen go so it's no surprise he's not a fan of Francis. But I agree that Francis had problems such as he never made a player for player trade in 4 years. (NHL for NHL player)

The De Cock article on Francis and Peters this morning was a pretty good read. The one tidbit that really made sense looking back is how Peters put the kibosh on JWilly as the captain because he was such an arsehole that was afraid to have the leadership handed over to a guy that would have really called him out on his antics.

All arguments and points being discussed are very valid. RF’s thinking/ perspective, his limited knowledge of past actions, viewing this as an isolated incident, not uncommon in the coaching community (see Babcock, Sutter), etc.
For me, it’s why re-sign a coach who was not proving himself? who wasn’t moving the needle? Who couldn’t put together a winning season? The money issue is only an excuse— other teams have budget issues, yet don’t hold onto bad fit coaches. RF, who couldn’t make a hockey trade, apparently couldn’t make a coaching change either.

I remember this being well discussed. There were those who believed that JWillisms was new to everyone but RF and RBA and should be a good vet and just lead by example. There were those who felt he was brought in to be Captain and should be named as such. Too bad RF couldn’t put his foot down and make that the demand.

Was Francis worried that his first cosching hire would be deemed a failure?

As I think about this in my own career, I remember loser bosses that everyone felt sucked, but feeling powerless to change things. Then a change is made, a weight is lifted, and the elephant in the room is gone.

Certainly different situations, different levels of abuse...more mental, but it does speak to how hard it is to speak up when your pay is on the line

It’s December 2. Jesse Puljujarvi and Julius Honka can’t play in the NHL this season, the deadline to sign was yesterday.

Zach Werenski is out 4 weeks with a shoulder injury. We don’t play the Jackets until January 16, so he should be back by then.

While nobody is coming out and point blank saying it, yeah. That pretty much sums it up. Ron Francis is not a stupid man, but he IS a vain man. And I do believe that his protection of Peters had everything to do with his own reputation. Smart guys don't hire jackasses like Peters ... so therefore we bend reality to make Peters something other than a jackass. It worked because this is hockey, and in hockey culture a LOT of great coaches have been jackasses. See half of the guys working in the 80s and 90s for examples. I mean ... it really did work. When Dundon cut Peters loose (or let him walk ... whatever) he got called stupid by nearly every writer covering the NHL ... other than Luke DeCock, who was paying close enough attention to know the truth.
