2019-20 Miscellaneous NHL/Hockey News Thread

Flyers dman Shane Gostisbehere will have arthroscopic knee surgery on Tuesday and will be out about 3 weeks.

I like the inside of the back collar.

Honestly, I have no clue why they didn't abandon the concept after seeing the Bruins or the Penguins logo on those jerseys.

For the first time since 2013, there was a goalie goal in the NHL. Pekka Rinne scores from behind his own goal line.

One month after trading Taylor Hall, Ray Shero was fired as Devils GM, per a tweet from Steve Cangialosi, their TV play by play guy. Is Brodeur the successor?

Edit: not yet. Corey Masiak, who covers the Devils for The Athletic, says Tom Fitzgerald is the interim GM but Brodeur is moving into Hockey Operations.

Pierre LeBrun’s weekly column at The Athletic is mostly trade rumblings. He thinks the Kings are dangling dman Alec Martinez, in the same fashion that they traded Jake Muzzin last year. Martinez is 32 and has 18 months left on a 6 year/$24 million contract. He can play both sides even though he’s a lefty. An Eastern Conference scout suggests the asking price would be a 2nd rounder and a prospect. LeBrun speculates that the Canes could have interest but would have to move a dman tro make it work.

CapFriendly projects the Canes will have about $1.2 million in cap space at the end of the season. Trading Gardiner would actually save the Canes cap money, trading Edmundson would eat up some of what’s left, his cap hit is $750k lower than Martinez. Gardiner has a 7 team no trade clause too.

How about TVR and a second rounder for Martinez? If a current defenseman has to go, I would love to see TVR moved first, Fleury seems like he has turned a corner enough to be a keeper here and I think Edmunson and the grit he brings back there is a bit too important to trade away right now. Gardiner has shown glimpses of late of getting better and turning a corner.

The Kings don't have much going on in their development pool, and badly need draft picks to jump start their re-tool. But they have so many terrible veteran contracts that they don't have a ton of options. Toffoli would yield some picks and is kind of wasted on that roster. Iafallo is fairly affordable depth for someone, and Martinez might get something in return. Otherwise ... who really wants anything they've got to offer? Everybody else either sucks or is signed to stupid money and/or term.

And I don't think LA is gonna want TVR in return for Martinez. He won't do them any good down the road, so if they do that it would probably jack up the pick to a 2nd rounder ... which is getting pretty pricey for no more than Martinez has left in the tank. Besides, he'd have to learn a completely different system on the fly. I doubt he's a fit here.

Leafs dman Morgan Rielly is out a minimum of 8 weeks with a broken foot. They recalled Rasmus Sandin earlier today.
