Habs News & Notes: Regular Season 2019-2020

More like 6 months. I'm not expecting a lot at the trade deadline but we need to have a plan for Gallagher, Danault, Petry, Arnia and Tatar, who will all be UFAs next year, and Lehkonen and KK hitting RFAs as well. If we can't extend Gallagher this summer, we should consider trading him.

Bingo especially for # 11 . Get a fair number or field offers .

I expect at least 2 of that group to be jettisoned

Of the Pending UFAs after the 20-21 season, Phillip Danault is the only one I would seriously consider re-signing.

I'd definitely try to resign Arnia.

Gallagher and Danault is the prices are right.

I'd even resign Petry if he can agree to a 2-3 years contract.

So if all 3 plus Tatar want ridiculous deals you moving all of them or caving in a contract or 2 ?

Domi I expect to get around 5.5 x 5 or he may want to go short 2- 3 year and get to UFA

Arnia and Gallagher are probably the two I would try harder to resign. I feel Danault is expandable. Tatar and Petry are as well.

That's my thinking too.

The only way I trade him is if his contract demands are completely outlandish.

I like Danault but he's going to be 28 before his next contract and he strikes me as a guy who's offense will drop in his 30s, and especially when he won't be playing on the top line. With KK, Suzuki, Poehling and Domi at center, he's a bit of a luxury. I also think his trade value is quite high.

Danault is like Carbonneau, smart center. He has another contract in him provided his demands aren’t ridiculous. He’ll play well into his 30s. 5 year deal tops.

5-6. Salaries have gone up

But yeah, 5x5 or 6 is about right. You don’t want longer term.

See that's where I have issues, I don't really want to invest 6M per year in Danault

Good point , it’s a delicate balance between getting fair contracts signed and who to retain on a bubble team

Too many 5-6 mil deals for players hitting their 30’s is a problem

Tough decisions ahead

Again though, isn’t the real problem here that the GM awarded deals to key mid level players that all expire at the same time (except Tatar who came signed)? These are heart and soul guys that make great second and third liners that are key to help you win when you have a proper top line. Unfortunately they may not get you a kings ransom in a trade but are equally hard to replace. One again terrible cap and asset management at all levels except for fourth and fifth line guys.

Yup , these guys are your secondary support staff . They are a contending team`s Hornquist type players

Now they are looking to get paid in their late 20`s and 30`s

Combined with an aging Petry and Price , terrible optics on a bubble team going nowhere

Young core is far from being established to help out

Major tough decisions need to be made and bad moves could set us back even further in our development

Not sure I agree about terrible cap and assets management here. All those guys were on a great contract and we got good value out of them. Expiring contracts for the expansion draft is also smart as it makes them less likely to be picked if left unprotected. We can complain about the lack of top line but that's a different matter. It's not that choose to not spend on those guys as we never had them to start with.

6M in 2 years might be a bargain for someone like him. He's the type of player that will age well. And I doubt he gets 8 years....it'll be 5-6 years like Gallagher's contract

Players I wouldn't extend would be : Gallagher, Petry, Tatar

I guess that's where we disagree, I don't see him aging that well, mostly his offensive production. He'll remain a good useful 2 way guys but I expect him to settle around the 35-40 points once he gets pushed down to the 3rd line.
