It really shouldn't be one party. The only thing that unites it is the realization that a conservative party will never hold the PM chair without being under the same tent together. It really is two different gangs though that are ready to knife fight with each other behind closed doors. I was actually kind of hoping that if this wexit garbage turns into anything at all, it will birth a federal version of the wildrose party.

The article kind of pisses me off. It spent roughly 2 paragraphs stating the fact of the matter, that these things get sorted after each election and that the offices she's in are earmarked for another minister. Then a further 5 paragraphs describing how it was "cleansed" or "blessed" by a native elder with seemingly random quotes from first nations elders saying that she should be able to keep the space and Ottawa is on algonquin land that was never "ceded".

The fuck kind of journalism is that?
 
The commentary on this is all so funny. "Oh it's because he was too socially conservative!"

Lol no.

His base wants canuck trump and not some soft cheeseball like scheer.

Unist’ot’en spokesperson Freda Huson (Howilhkat) said that the RCMP’s militarized posture during the raid was consistent with a long history of colonial violence.

“In our experience, since first contact, RCMP have been created by the federal government to dispossess Indigenous peoples of their lands,” Huson said. “They have proven [that] through their harassment of my people to support Coastal GasLink in invading our territories.”

That's a blow for them. I dislike her, but she seemed like the candidate that would have the broadest appeal.

Stephen Harper has also resigned from the board of The Conservative Fund. Reportedly it's because in that position, you're required to be neutral in any leadership race, but Harper is determined to oppose Jean Charest's candidacy.

I imagine Harper will throw his support behind Mackay?
 
Tough to say. Mackay might be way too "red" for the westerners.

Maybe, maybe their hatred of Trudeau makes them a bit more pragmatic, but my experience in dealing with Alberta conservatives suggests to me that they're more likely to splinter if an outsider tries to drag them to the centre, than they are to stomache it for the sake of pragmatism.

Maybe. But I dunno.

For a dyed-in-the-wool Alliance/Reformer like Harper, MacKay might have too much Progressive Conservative stench still clinging to him. MacKay's also kind of a lightweight bozo that was never really a strong member of cabinet for Harper.

He might prefer a loyal soldier and ultra-partisan like Pierre Poilievre, unless it comes down to a choice between MacKay or Charest.

Boomers from coast-to-coast (including many members of my family) would dance in the streets if he did.

I don't know if Harper redux could win, but he'd do better in Ontario than Scheer did I'm sure.

That would be awesome. It would probably lead to lightweight Scheer maintaining his hold. I think we've seen peak Scheer already, and as long as Trudeau doesn't completely fucking bottle this term, it's clear sailing for another.
