Habs trade Scandella to Blues

Not sure I fully agree. I think we drafted for need with MacCarron (go figure) and KK. The rest of the draft I'd argue we drafted BPA. However we clearly had a focus on centers and defensemen in the past 2-3 drafts.

There were interviews of Timmins right after the first round, and I remember it clear as day, when he said the mandate was to pick a defenseman. I remember it specifically in the 2015 draft when we took Juulsen. I also believe that was the mandate when we took Sergachev.

[Edit] I can't find the 2015 interview, but it's been made mention here (1:10), the reporter says "Yesterday, Marc said 'we had drafted forwards 3 years in a row, it was time for defensemen' https://www.rds.ca/videos/hockey/timmins-fait-le-point-sur-sa-recolte-3.1138494

To be fair, Sergachev is kind of a complimentary player as well at the moment.
Sergachev is already the second most valuable D on the Bolts at only 21.
This kid’s overall game has taken a huge step this year and he has been a monster physically, even going at it almost every shift with Ryan Reaves last game vs VGK and holding his own.
Complimentary player at the moment maybe, but make no mistakes, he is a core player of this team moving forward.

Stamkos
Kucherov
Point
Cirelli
Hedman
Sergachev
Vasilevskyi

Those players are what I would consider the core of the team.
Or at least they are all more important than any other players on the roster and anything that can be done to keep them must be done.
Unless you get an upgrade of course.

On a stacked team which inflates his stats...

Sergachev is not just a product of this team, he’s a legit top pairing D in the making.

Also he’s been playing 3rd pairing most nights and 2nd PP, I would argue this is not optimal regarding stats inflation.
He could probably put up more points if he was having 1st PP duties with any playoff teams in the NHL.

Tampa Bay won this trade hands down.

Unfortunately for Montreal’s faithfuls, Sergachev was no exception to the Russian purge.

Now times are changing again, with the addition of Kovalchuk, as the Romanov must me convinced to come West.

This is good for the Canadiens.
Russian thrives and love playing in Montreal, embracing the passion of the fans and the spotlight that comes with it.

Bang on , this trade was robbery for TB

There’s a theory out there, I heard on a podcast, that the Kovalchuk trade was very much about rebuilding the Habs’ reputation. It wasn’t just Russians... Subban and Pacioretty also left under very tense atmospheres. Players talk...

Meh, all teams go through contentious dealings with players be it contract or trade.

Yup but if you’re NYR it’s water of a ducks back as players are stampeding to sign there, no so much Mtl, so the slightest negative becomes magnified.

It`s not that big a deal . You get a Panarin caliber player every decade willing to go to New York .

Their success is still tied to drafting and developing like every other team

Throw in Fox who limited his trade destinations to 1-team and Trouba who did the same...that’s luxury Habs will never have.

Panarin is in the running for the Hart and could break 100-points this season. That signing IS a big deal. Then you throw in Zibenijhad and Strome deals and the core was essentially built by UFA and trades, not drafting & development.

Stop the whining. Plenty of cities have the same issue. NYR haven’t win since 94. They’re doing no better than the Habs.

all the teams who sold at the deadline got free draft picks for players nobody can use

Tampa got lots of people laughing at them for the high price they paid for both deadline acquisitions.

However both players have very good value contracts until the end of the 2020-2021 season.

So those were not only traditional rentals per se. Brisebois was gearing up for next season too.

Still, those moves and the other traditional rentals are becoming much better deals for the sellers that’s for sure.

Signs with the Blues for 4 years at $3.75 million per. This definitely worked out well for him. He's not very good.
