2019-20 Hurricanes Prospects and Checkers Thread

Jack Drury’s season is over. Harvard will forfeit their playoff series at RPI this weekend. RPI had already said they were closing the riink. There is no word on the rest of the Ivies, but Yale, Princeton and Cornell are still involved. Cornell has closed Lynah to the public and will allow each player to invite 3 people to their series against Princeton. No word on the other 2 series with Colgate at Clarkson and Yale at Quinnipiac.

So that suddenly opens up Drury to seek an NHL contract from the Canes and play with the Checkers on an ATO or even force the Canes into burning an entry level contract season this year. He also of course can just finish out his studies this semester and go back for his Junior year. He had 20 goals and 19 assists in just 28 games. To me that screams 'turn pro!' but we will see what happens.

The Ivy League has gone one step further and cancelled all spring sports. Individual schools can make their own decisions about letting their teams play in any postseason games for which they've qualified.

NESCAC has also cancelled all spring sports...

One of my best friend's son runs track for Weslyan. After training by running 80 miles per week all winter, he just learned that all his spring meets have been cancelled.

It wouldn't surprise me if he goes back for his junior year. This addition of goal scoring to his bag of tricks is a recent development. If he can go score a bag full of goals in college again next season, then he's really starting to be the kind of prospect who has some leverage.

Assuming the AHL also suspends their season shortly, might as summarize the 2 games the Checkers did play this week:

Mar 10 Cleveland W 2-1 Kinkade with the win. McCormick and Mattheos with the goals.

Mar 11 Cleveland W 3-2 (OT) Ned with the win. Lorentz x2 and Bean with the goals.

Not sure where things go from here but I doubt they play Sat/Sun and suspend games indefinitely. They very well could just shut down the rest of the AHL season being a minor league. The Checkers are tied for 3rd in their division for what that might be worth.

Expect the CHL and all the Junior leagues in Canada shutting down in the next day or two according to Canadian media.

Yeah ... a lot less is riding on minor league games. They could suspend play and the if there's enough time left on the calendar to play the post season when it makes sense to resume, they can just use the standings as of today to seed. Or, they could just call it a day.

Here is how all of our prospects ended their seasons (only SweEL and Liiga players played games last week):

Its not at all clear what will happen as we progress through this shutdown of the league, but all of:

Luke Martin
Matt Filipe
Max Zimmer
Luke Stevens
David Cotton

Have played their last college games. The Canes retain their signing rights until August 15th after which they will be UFAs. Max Zimmer had an ATO with Charlotte before anything paused, but was not signed by the Canes (yet). No word on any of the other 4.

I saw on Twitter that Charlotte had released all of their ATO guys on Saturday with the exception of Zimmer.

How slim are the chances that he could replace Helvig next season in the pipeline?
Replace? Dunno ... but Helvig is a pretty good candidate to get pushed out of the system this summer due to his legal issues. Booth is nobody's idea of a hot prospect, but he's a decent minor leaguer. Aside from him, we've got younger prospects not in the pro pipeline and kinda/sorta/fringe NHLers. There's not much in between.

Patrik Puistola has signed a 2 year contract with JYP in Liiga. He and Anttoni Honka will be teammates next year.

Puistola's contract can be voided if he signs an NHL deal in the meantime, if anybody's wondering. Apparently the Canes are expecting that to be an issue for at least one more year, but a strong campaign next season could well position him for the jump.

I think that rule exists in every league not called the KHL. It will be good to see him get regular time in one place, as Cmal showed above, he bounced around with 4 different teams across 2 leagues last year. At least they were all senior leagues and he didn‘t spend any time in the U20 league.

Yeah ... really just pointing to the part about the expectations. But it seems like people ask about the contract thing every time a prospect signs a deal in Europe. Just trying to cut down on CMal's work load in this time of great stress.

Tweet yesterday from Andy Strickland of Fox Sports Midwest says that Luke Martin is likely not going to sign with the Canes. I don't think he is much of a prospect anyways.

It would be nice to get Filipe signed too, but Waddell bagged the top priority and got bonus depth at the same time.
