2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

The fans with red tinted glasses will need someone else to blame their problems on after Swofford. I have confidence they will find somebody. I guess they can tar and feather the FB coach this year assuming there is a season. Looking at the schedule he may not make it back from the blowout loss at Clemson. He may get the Gerard Gallant treatment, looking for a cab.

Look ... it's possible to think Swofford was a less than even handed Commissioner AND take responsibility for your own school's failings. I have ALWAYS done that, so ... respectfully ... take this comment and stuff it. And don't give me the usual "I'm talking about State fans in general" stuff seeing as how there are plenty of us on this board and your comments don't apply to any of us so far as I can tell.

Yes it's true, Swofford did not make them hire Robinson, Sendek, Fowler, Kiffin, Reed, Amato, Obrien, Lowe, Gottfried ,etc. Of course in FB UNC and Duke hired a lot of duds too. Only 1 dud in BB and that's Doherty because they stupidly insisted on hiring an alum. Maybe when K goes they will be smart enough to hire the best guy not just a Duke alum.

This is probably the 20th time you've posted some version of this information, which is news to exactly no one. And utterly irrelevant since reasonable people can have differing options on the job the commissioner of a conference does without being partisan hacks. I'd get into details, but there's honestly no point. I don't like the guy. So what? I don't like a lot of people ... it's kind of my thing.

The NBA tested 302 players, 16 were positive, or 5.3%. They must remain in self-isolation until cleared by a doctor.

Morehouse College in Atlanta has cancelled all fall sports. That affects the football and cross country teams.

It's OK to not like a guy. We all do that. What's odd is the many NCSU fans who think there is some anti NCSU plot run by Swofford and many others related to UNC. Maybe the high rollers in the skyboxes don't think that. But it's a very common complaint among the unwashed masses.

Here is a perfect example from my own family : the lawyer lost the will for my father. My brother says "Oh, a typical stupid UNC grad screwing up again." guess where she got her BS degree in engineering? you only will need 1 guess. She eventually found the will.

OK ... I going to ask again if we can't go ahead and understand that none of the State fans on this board (and there are several of us) are the guys you keep hammering on? We're not "that guy" but you keep talking like we are. I'd love to move past that rather than for it to keep coming up all the time.

FWIW, 5.3% is actually a little lower than the national positive test rate over the last week or so. Since the various States have loosened restrictions, the Johns Hopkins charts have shown new test positivity rates between 6.35 and 6.85% ... whereas we were bumping along consistently in the mid 5% range for the previous two months, sometimes dipping into the 4s.

So ... not surprising in any way.

Under Armor trying to cancel their big sponsorship deal with UCLA

I don’t know what Under Amour was expecting. The football team has been mostly middling since their last Rose Bowl appearance in 1998. The basketball team was coming off back to back Sweet 16 appearances in 13-14 and 14-15 but had not advanced that far since 2007-08, the last of 3 straight Final Four appearances.

A couple of factors were working against UA here .... primarily timing and market reality versus market perception. The timing problem is obvious but not just related to Covid shutdowns, but that also plays into the reality versus perception issue. I really doubt that much of anyone in college sports business would have predicted the incredible decline in PAC12 sports in the revenue sports over the last 203 years. Maybe UA's people could have seen the trend coming as they negotiated UCLA's deal in 2015 and 2016 and yeah, UCLA's brand wasn't exactly at it's high water mark or anything ... but that whole conference has dropped off the map in football and basketball, and done so REALLY quickly. UA ended up paying premium prices for bargain bin impact, and I'm not surprised to see them try and cut the bleeding. They probably figure that it'll be cheaper to slug it out in court than to keep throwing money at UCLA for television exposure they just aren't even going to get.

Cam Newton signed with New England for 1 year. I guess nobody else wanted him.
Or he was waiting on New England all along ... or a combination of the two. I understand that his latest status on the foot was much more positive, which probably spurred a bit of interest.

MLS teams started to arrive at the Walt Disney World Resort yesterday. Looks like the first teams to check in are being housed at the Swan and Dolphin resorts, and God bless them ... glorified Marriotts the both of them.

I've decided it's dumb to play without fans. But since it's all about the money I know that's why they are playing.

College sports like to pretend it's not about the money but I bet they play too. If they ban fans around 10% of fans will throw tantrums. The rest will just watch on TV. TV controls college FB and BB anyway. the bad thing is the tennis, soccer, etc teams that will be cut due to lack of cash.

Been to the Dolphin out of desperation once, it was the only on site property available for a short notice Thanksgiving booking. Never again.

It is also an indication of the pecking order for Disney/ESPN TV properties. The NBA is getting some rooms at the Grand Floridian, Yacht Club and a new building at the Coronado and MLS Is relegated to the Swan and Dolphin.

As someone who has spent more than 1,400 nights of his life in Marriott properties, I am offended by this statement! :)
