Around the League 2019-2023 Edition

I could see a team taking Byfield at 1. He was just as good as Lafreniere at 17 and is a center.

Trading down from 1 to 3 only makes sense if you believe Stutzle is a star. Which he might be. Or that LA is going to take him.

dont have to trade until LA selects at #2 and then could pull the trigger if the player the leafs want is available at 3

Even on the occasion when trading 1 for 3+5 makes sense 95% of GMs would not dare do it because of the risk of severe hindsight criticism. If you simply draft the consensus #1, you will not feel the heat if that player doesn’t live up to the hype

That's not my takeaway from a look at those drafts at all.

looks like you just looked at the 3 and 5 pick though

like i said if you trust your scouting...

2007: Kane vs 2 of shit

2008: Stamkos vs 2 of Hot Karl, Pietro, Bailey, Eberle (reach)

2009: JT vs 2 of Duchene, OKL, Kadri, Kane

2010: Hall vs 2 of Skinner, Johansen, Tarasenko, Nino

2011: Nuge vs 2 of Huberdeau, Zib, Hamilton, Schiefle, Couturier

2012: Nail vs 2 of Chuck, Rielly, Trouba, Forsberg, Hertl, Teravainen

2013: MacKinnon vs 2 of Jones, Monohan, Horvat Lindholm

2014: Ekblad vs 2 of Leon, Willie, Ehlers, Larkin, Pasta (reach)

Matthews and McDavid vs junk

2017: too early but Hischier vs Makar, Petterson

There's a hell of a gap between "trusting" your scouting and expecting to take the best player available at the slot a high percentage of the time.

that is why there are two of those guys not just the two best

so like i said if i am the habs i gamble

and i am probably biased against the Q in addition to the age thing
eg Huberdeau scored more and had 1.95 ppg in his 18 year old season

Knowing Dubas he would use the #1 to unload any contract he doesn't want, get a goalie prospect and try for 3 & 5 in addition to that to boot.

All this being said, I'm not so sure Ottawa does the trade for #1, they need a lot of help and 3 & 5 goes a long way for them.

If the top pick is Sid or CMD generational , it’s a no brainer .

However in a star studded top 5 without that franchise player you have to strongly consider

If all hit projections who turns down a #1D in Drysdale plus a solid front liner in Stuzle for a top 10 scorer in Lafreniere

I am not turning down a better Hughes or Kopitar 2.0 in Byfield for a AL.

You are getting 2 studs locked up on an ELC , giving you options to make moves down the road if your cap is shot

Yet you know full well they could never, ever pass on Lafreniere. Ever.

Yeah, from what I gather, if there's a year to want 2 top 5 picks > 1st overall, this year seems like a prime candidate. The top guy isn't McDavid or Matthews, or even really a MacKinnon level talent from what I take, so getting 2 potential stars makes a ton of sense.

Except for the Habs. I'm far from a "Franco-pusher", and think the org is insanely short-sighted when it comes to coaches and GM options, but I could confidently bet a million dollars that the team wouldn't trade down from the first pick. Doubly so given our current management situation.

I'm speaking of this particular situation.

If

Habs have #1 pick
Concensus #1 talent is francophone
Draft in Montreal (although now likely virtual)

They can't pass on Lafreniere for that trade. Just can't. They'd get crucified.

That you're regularly reaching into the teens here is kind of proving my point.

The 1st pick is a known commodity. Not necessarily bust proof but you dont have to worry about other teams taking guys you like that you assumed would be there or trading out of the pick to a team you had not counted on and if the number 1 hits you need to hit on both picks to win the deal.

Its too much risk imo. You rarely win the deal selling a loonie for quarters or in this case chances of future loonies and quarters

They will need to play in Quebec City when the Bell Center gets bombed ,there is no way in hell they pass on AL even for picks 2-5

sure

which is why i mentioned i gamble - no doubt laf is the safe bet

besides I do not always do a 1 for 3 or 5 deal

but in the last few years i probably would have
and this year i would again

to me i would rather chance it with Perfitti and Stuzle (or Byfield)
