GDT: Canes v. Caps 7/29 4:00

After typing the last one of these on March 12, I never thought that I’d be typing one nearly 20 weeks later, but here we are.

The Canes face off agains the Caps in their exhibition game in Toronto. Teams can dress 13 forwards and 7 dmen. RBA said both goalies will play but in typical fashion, he didn’t name a starter. I’d be shocked if it was Mrazek though. Both goalies need to avoid turning into a pool of jelly when they walk into the building; it didn’t turn out so well the last time they played in Toronto. The Canes finished 9 points behind the Caps and scored 18 fewer goals, but also allowed 22 fewer. Hamilton and Necas are out.

When the season paused, John Carlson led with 75 points, built on the strength of 60 assists, 4th in the league. Alex Ovechkin had 48 goals, tied for 1st in the league, but only 19 assists. Braden Holtby had a Cam Ward-like season in goal, 3.11 goals against, .897 Save %, both in the bottom 10 among qualified goalies. Backup Ilya Samsonov is out, so the Caps brought last year’s backup Pheonix Copley, and Vitek Vanacek, a 2014 2nd round pick who has never played an NHL game.

Fox Sports Carolinas for TV, Mike and Tripp will be broadcasting from The Deck at PNC.

What's up with Necas?
3 days ago Brindy said he "did something while he was skating around" but I've read at least twenty people online speculating that he had Covid and isn't ready yet. Take your pick :0)

Oh ... and get used to moron fans (and probably moron journalists too) assuming EVERYBODY who misses practice or a game has "the Covid," when it could be a hang nail or a groin issue or a billion other things.

And for the record, this is an exhibition/practice game/scrimmage ... so I'm 100% in snark mode and officially obliged to encourage all of you not to take it too seriously. If they lose, all is not lost. If they win, the Cup is not necessarily forthcoming.

I’m interested to see the mysterious Sami Vatanen. I watched the last 2 periods of Flyers-Pens last night and it had the appropriate level of exhibition game intensity. The little I saw of the Battle of Alberta last night was a little more intense.

That's what I'm watching as well, especially how well he works with Slavin... looks like we will need Slavin-New Guy to click as a top pairing to get by the Rangers.

What?!?!? Come on JB, this is a must win game. If Svech-Aho-Turbo doesn't score at least 3 goals in this game you can start the Lafreniere watch because its over for the Canes. This is the first game of the Canes dominating this entire process.

Being serious, no matter how this all plays out, its so much more fun having the Canes be relevant again. So much more fun to hear national pundits talk about how good our team is. To see NHL commercials that show Svech moments. To see SportsNet show ads that have Aho in them.

My only expectations/hopes for this game is for the Canes not to look horrible and have no one get hurt.

Per Michael Smith, Canes will dress 13 forwards, 7 dmen, subject to change.

Forwards
Svech-Aho-Turbo
Nino-Trocheck-Foegele
Dzingel-Staal-Williams
McGinn-Geekie-Martinook
Lorentz

Defensemen
Slavin-Vatanen
Skjei-Edmundson
Gardiner-TVR
Fleury

Looks like a Cup winning lineup to me?

At least we still have 7 NHL caliber Dmen available. That would look so much better with Dougie and Pesce in there, but it could be worse (and is for many of the teams in the playoffs)

Canes Twitter? Is that you?

Who am I kidding? Of course it is.

Well lots of rust on the 'Canes side... Edmundson and Skjei look rough..
Mike is trying to keep it simple (good plan) but for the radio it's going to be bad.

In the "of course they did" department, Spectrum (or FSCR) screwed up the broadcast... The Spectrum apps (browser, Android, Samsung SmartTV) aren't showing the game on FSCR ch. 50, they're showing boxing. Luckily we still have one TV with the regular digital cable box so we can watch the game.

Well I missed most of the interesting parts of the second the part I saw (the last half after the goal) Both teams looked bad. Caps a little less so but there was no life

You can also watch through the Fox Sports Go app if you have a Spectrum subscription, Bill.

Thanks! We're good for today since we have the cable box on our family room screen anyway, but we also like to have the game on the upstairs screens if we're not sitting put the whole time. I forgot about the FSGO app, that should help on the other devices in case it's still broken Saturday, except for the Samsung SmartTV app; I've never seen a FSGO app in that app store.

I’ve hooked my iPad up to my surround sound receiver or directly to a TV too. That saved me from having to watch Jack Edwards call the first Whalers game, since I was at my mother-in-law’s house in the Boston suburbs.

Was Mike and Tripp at the arena calling the game or were they watching a stream of it? It seemed like they were a couple of seconds off of the action.

I forgot about that feeling of frustration while watching my favorite team lumber through a game. Thank goodness this one didn't count for anything, but I'm feeling pretty pessimistic about the play-in series against the Rangers.
