those are the types of players that we will need our homegrown pipeline to produce to fill out our bottom six for cheap during our top-heavy window.
so yeah, we can care.
20yr old.
Sure it’s good to have cheap depth like that, but we have plenty. And can always find more in UFA bargain bins.
I think the point is that a 20 yr old kid capable of putting up decent production has a chance to be more important to your club than just cheap depth in the future.
I mean the fact is Dubas would have likely gotten the Leafs Bemstrom and Debrincat or Girard to add to their pipeline. In just 2 years of drafts. That is enormous.
And Hunter would have never picked Robertson of course. They would have picked the "future Chara" that gets selected in every draft.
Knowing the nerd I have a feeling he would have passed on Hart, but they would definitely have at least one of Debrincat or Girard. Too bad.Debrincat and Hart for nothing would’ve made this team unbeatable for maybe a decade. Forget 2 cups, maybe 7, if they could all be kept under the cap.
But this will be, as everyone agrees, a draft flush with “Next One” gems in the top-10 bracket. Surely not even the Leafs — so woeful on the talent assessment file over recent decades — can screw it up this time.
Think, fingers crossed, Strome: Manna from pivot heaven, Mississauga boy, the OHL scoring champion and McDavid teammate would be for the Leafs; a six-foot-three centre in the Joe Thornton mold (his personal idol) once he fills out. He’d instantly solve Toronto’s problems down the middle, where no one has sparkled since Mats Sundin left town.
Strome’s brother Ryan currently plays for the New York Islanders and younger ’bro Matthew played for the Toronto Marlboros — this past week was selected by the Hamilton Bulldogs of the OHL.
But it could be Hanifin, the offensive defenceman who scored 23 points in 37 games as a freshman to Boston College; could be Lawson Crouse, the Kingston Frontenacs left winger. Shanahan wasn’t tipping his hand or his inclination.

A good article on who the Leafs could pick with their first this year. Kloke is a good writer.
Who should the Maple Leafs draft with the 15th overall pick?
Now that the Maple Leafs have a first-round pick in the upcoming draft, whom might they use it on?theathletic.com
