2019 Carolina Hurricanes Off Season Thread

Indeed. Even 3rd round pick (if Gauthier is the body) is pushing it. We sometimes throw around picks... look at some of our current players and rounds they were drafted in. Aho was a 2nd rounder (even if he should have been in the top four picks of that draft in hindsight, like swap him with Jesse in order they were drafted...) but we also got a bunch of really good players from 3rd round drafting. Indeed, Gauthier is NOT in the same territory as Jesse either, he may have developed on the slower side, but there has been progress and last season he started to show more implication in play and production as a result. Gauthier + a 3rd rounder seems fair though, since we would have to give SMT. Personally, Gauthier straight up for him is already a riskier deal for the Canes than it would be for the Oilers.

I also was wondering if this whole Ducks deal may lead to a flip trade where we turn around and trade Kase for Jesse. They need wingers in Edmonton too. That would allow Jesse to replace Necas in Charlotte as he graduates this season. Anyway, who knows. I really hope Necas is given a good fair chance akin to "hey kid, the position is yours to LOSE" starting out of camp.

Or a 3rd rounder for him. Straight up. I might be enticed to give them a 2nd rounder for him straight up. Maybe a conditional 3rd that turns into a 2nd if Jesse plays 30 games for the NHL team this year. Or some sort of condition.

I will add as an aside, I like Jesse. I have been following his story with the Oilers and tbh, the media and management there seems to have decided to paint him out to being difficult and entitled. The problems related to his developed are ALL on the Oilers though. They did jerk him around and then some multiplied by 5. I don't blame him for wanting a fresh start to reset and start a new somewhere else. Come on... this is the Oilers we are talking about. That team is just horribly run imho.
I think Jesse is worth a 2nd rounder straight up. Preferably I'm holding on to Gauthier too.

Don't take this the wrong way James, but you really like to toss around possibilities that involve trading for or signing a player only to flip him immediately for another player. That just doesn't ever really happen ... and when it does, it's generally a three way deal in the first place. And those are super rare too.

That said ... Puljujarvi is a HUGE risk, and Holland will either eventually back off his asking price or he'll end up trying to figure out a way to talk him into giving it another shot in Edmonton. Obviously the first option is the most likely. Here's the thing though ... for Carolina, he's probably a risk that you take ONLY if the price is a bargain. An excess pick, a prospect you aren't high on ... that kind of thing. Otherwise, you let somebody else take the risk. Oh ... and if Carolina does somehow end up wrangling Kase out of Anaheim, they 100% are not flipping him for pretty much anyone. He's a different kind of risk, but if he can stay healthy his upside might be higher than Puljujarvi's anyway.

Kase is a proven 20 goal scorer. Puljujarvi is not. If I were going to trade a warm body for him, it would be a bottom 6 or 3rd pair player in Charlotte.

And so it's clear ... I'd take a risk on Kase's durability improving 5 times before I'd take a single run at Puljujarvi having his head out of his butt long enough to be a top line player. I'm absolutely not buying that all of the fault with his career lies with the Oilers. They didn't force him to show up out of shape three years in a row and play like he couldn't possibly have cared less the last two years. There's not scoring and then there's whatever the heck that kid has been doing every time I've watched him the last two years.

Maybe Puljujarvi works out for somebody. If so ... golf clap. I'm not holding my breath.

Fortunately Dundon has a back channel to Karpat via his fellow Sebastian Aho fan club member, Harri Aho.

The Director of Hockey Operations for Karpat should be able to provide a scouting report.

I wonder how much of Pujujarvi’s success in his draft year was playing with Aho?
A big chunk of his rep comes from his international age group play, generally as the other wing on a line with Aho and Laine. He seemed to fit in really well and people discounted Aho's contributions to the line more than the other two. That plus his small frame landed Aho in the 2nd round. The other two were big boys and you know how the NHL is about big guys ... they always get the benefit of the doubt. Laine's a distinct talent with an elite shot, but looks to be a bit of a flake. Puljujarvi thus far looks talented but WAY less than 100% committed to playing a team game. Aho is Aho ... determined, driven, talented and lethal.

Honestly ... Carolina probably got the best one off of that line.

I always think of Bob Brind’Amour when it comes to players like Pujujarvi and his current situation or even when Jonathan Drouin was in Tampa and complaining about ice time and being in the AHL.
When Bob Brind’Amour was giving his son guidance, telling him to go to Notre Dame boarding school and get his education versus going into the ranks of junior hockey, he basically told RBA if you’re as good as they say, you’ll get noticed and recognized no matter where you play. Thus, if a Drouin or Pujujarvi are as good as they thought and say, they’d be in the NHL earlier rather than later. Just like Josh HoSang.

Another board I was reading at the time had a number of Finnish posters who claimed that Aho was the reason that both his wingers looked as dominant as they were on that 2016 world junior gold medal team, particularly tournament scoring leader Jesse Puljujarvi: 7GP (5-12-17) +8

EDIT: Aho was the second scoring leader for the tournament: 7GP (5-9-14) +9

Oh I've been convinced since two seasons now that we have, did. You know those 're-draft' posts, if you could do the draft again, I see Aho being drafted in the top 6. But hindsight is 20-20. Ps. I distinctly recall ragging on RF too for picking him. I'm not always _wrong_ nor right, but own up to either one =D
Ps2 Also, yeah, "flipping" in JamesNorthern language amounts to a threeso...errr threeway. Its basically the same thing, without the slight to the player. ;)

I guess we disagree regarding Puljujarvi, I also see the risks, although completely different in each player's case as equal. Maybe the eternal optimist, but I'm not convinced a year 4 player should be given up on because of injuries (see Jeff Skinner). Injuries aside I think Kase's got some game to him, good wheels, some buzz, some passion and determination. That fits in well with this bunch.
As for Jesse, its the reunion factor and the possibility of having a behomoth winger on Aho's line who connects. Besides, I do believe much more in our org's ability to develop a player... he's not like a reclamation project yet by any stretch. He's started off well with Karpat and is surrounded by connections to this club. Not only is Aho's dad in the mix, but let's not forget former Cane Jussi Jokinen, owner, still plays for Karpat. Anyway, at this point, it looks like Faulk aint going anywhere, part 11. Its like the umptienth time he's been speculated on in the trade front only for things to die down to silence. I'll believe it when I see it. Regardless of the return.

One of the rumors I got in my cell phone feed suggested that Faulk is willing to go to Anaheim but wants a contract extension in place before he agrees to waive the NTC.

How would the logistics of that work?

The Canes almost certainly have given Faulk's agent permission to talk contract with the Ducks. If they can come to terms on a contract extension, then the teams will pull the trigger on the trade and the Ducks will then have him sign the extension. If they can't come to terms, then Faulk effectively nixes the trade and the Canes continue to shop him around the league.

Training camp has officially started so the off season is over. I’m unsticking this.

Apparently reading reports (Friedman) that the Canes are not happy with one Honka and are possibly interested in acquiring somewhat of a bust defenseman Julius Honka drafted 14th overall by Dallas in 2014, brother of Anttoni Honka whom we drafted

No thanks on Julius Honka. Unless they are giving him away for like a 5th round pick the Canes shouldn't go anywhere near him.

I dunno know about Honka. He's such a horrible fit for Dallas that I'm not sure I've got any kind of read on the guy ... other than his rep as a guy who won't take coaching.

So this talk of Faulk wanting an extension in place before agreeing to any trade... is that an extension procured by us or a guarantee from the Ducks on an extension if he agrees to a trade? Ok, looks dead now but still. That Kase guy got me all enticed. Reading good stuff about him.
