Around the League: 2019-2020 Regular Season

What Gerard Gallant accomplished in year 1 of that franchise may be the greatest coaching feat of all time. And even beyond, they have been one of the best teams in the NHL. He may have contributed to his own firing, as expectations went too high, too quick. I know coaches have a short shelf...

    Team Canada/2020 World Juniors

I agree with your point of consistency throughout the games. The truly good refs develop a feel for the game though, senses flow, can tighten up if needed when it comes to some of the more borderline calls ,etc. It is almost an art perhaps. Though paradoxical, consistency and variability can...

Love the schizo hockey of that tournament. But one thing never changes-international refereeing remains as bad as it was in the days of Kompala/Bader. No flow in the first two periods due to over reffing, and they still get many calls majorly wrong. We complain about NHL reffing, but...

Mike Camaleri was too predictable with his release. He always went to the same spot. I hope Caulfield develops some unpredictability pattern, but we don't want anyone messing with him. Lafleur and Brett Hull (dare I mention their names in the same post as Caulfield), though different types of...

Bergevin is probably suggesting to the U.S. that Caulfield be put in a checking role, as that's his future wth the Habs. Teach him to play well without the puck.

    GDT - Game 38 Canadiens @ Lightning - 12/28/19 - 7:00EST

Price isn't really all that good anymore,is he? Mind you, not his fault we lost. He just doesn't add a whole lot it seems to me. Had some good years.

Its funny. Despite a lot of blending of hockey styles over the years so that they are almost sterile and interchangeable , I'm thankful some things remind me of a different time. The style of play in that game we are watching today is so traditional Russian, I'm surprised CCCP is not written...

Some truth to his overall impact on that game, but as you say, he puts up numbers. That's the kind of guy you might not want in the first round, but given the limitations of the Habs roster, he (and Lavoie) would be worth an offer (assuming it wasn't made) to move up a few picks when still...

I thought Lavoie and Kaliyev were very good today. They were two guys I was hoping we would trade up for at the point when they lasted into the second round. Both bit of a gamble, but showed their potential high upside today. Bergevin needs to get a little more creative at the draft, not just...

I think that has been Julien's biggest strength as a coach.

Mooseheads unloading players,as you know Nova. though I thought they had a shot had they gone the other way. But they usually think long term. Groulx,MacIsaac, Lavoie the logical ones to be traded now as well. For a mediocre team, having 3 guys go down to the wire for Team Canada is impressive...

Yeah, never much liked that franchise. Maybe because they beat us, a couple of times I think, in the playoffs.

Thought he was younger, for some reason. In that case, it may make sense. Still, hate to see him go.

Unless that's a real high first rounder and a real good prospect, I don't do that deal. He can score. A rare beast around here the last 25 years. The pick will likely score less.

    Les Habitants Prospects Thread

Yeah, interesting Alan. Not sure what type of design the analysis would follow. Would be easy to compare long term success rates of the guys who come in at 18 to those drafted but who don't come in right away. But the two groups wouldn't be equivalent from the start-one would assume perhaps...

Mercer over Newhook. Both Newfoundlanders. If one were to make it, would have bet Newhook going in. Sometimes I guess its about where a player might fit in. Mercer's stock has risen for the draft this year.

Anyway, Hainsey did fine. He doesn't have to blame himself for anything.

We seem to have lost a few "slow maturing" guys. I often wondered what kinds of supports were in place and how much insight we had in dealing with them. Some of them had real talent. Ribiero,Kostytsyns, Hainsey, probably others. Maybe every team does.

Well, he was kind of exiled. We kept holding on to progress stoppers like Dandenault,Bouillon, Dykhuis, who the team thought were better than they were. He and Beauchemin should never of gone on waivers. Kind of funny-he had a much better career than Komisarek as it turns out. He was kind of...

Ron Hainsey to play game # 1,100 in Montreal. I guess we can officially remove him from the bad pick list, where I've sort of placed him over the years. It took a few years to fully evaluate his career, but not a bad first round selection it turns out. Not a great player by no means, the type...
