Lapierre pots two, including OT winner as Bulldogs edge Americans 3-2

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Maxim Lapierre had two goals and an assist, including the game-winner just 39 seconds into overtime, to lead the Hamilton Bulldogs over the Rochester Americans 3-2 Sunday night in AHL action.

The Bulldogs also erased two one-goal deficits in the game (1-0 and 2-1) to earn the win.

Rochester opened the scoring at 13:41 of the first period when Clarke MacArthur notched his first goal of the season. Marek Zagrapan and Mike Card earned assists on the goal.

Matt D'Agostini evened the score 1-1 for Hamilton at the 15:28 mark of the opening frame. D'Agostini's goal, assisted by Corey Locke and Lapierre.

The Americans restored their one-goal lead at 2-1 with only 16 seconds left in the first period. Kenndal McArdle and David Brine combined to set up Mark Mancari for his first goal of the campaign.

At 11:52 of the middle stanza, Lapierre intercepted a pass from Amerks goaltender David Shantz and buried the puck into an empty net to tie the game 2-2. Lapierre's unassisted goal was the lone scoring play of the second period.

Sergei Kostitsyn, who earned his first-career professional point, and Ryan O'Byrne drew helpers on Lapierre's game-winning goal in OT.

Between the pipes, Jaroslav Halak turned aside 27 of the 29 shots he faced for the Bulldogs while David Shantz made 18 saves on 21 shots for the Americans in a losing effort.

A few game notes about our most important prospects

OByrne was a +3 in his first game, paired with Valentenko, a few lapses but in general playing well. SK getting some point PP play and excelled at it. Valentenko a notable presence, hitting hard.

To quote a fellow fan:

"Finally, Valentenko. His family moto must be hit first. Ask questions later. If they survive. A couple of good hits, really uses his stick on guys, trying to knock pucks loose. Floored a couple of guys. I really like him so far but could take some bad penalties."

Halak very steady, does not seem affected by demotion.

Pavel Valentenko

As mentioned, standard operating procedure for the Bulldogs blue line on opening
night was to play steady, solid hockey and not draw much attention to yourself. It
would appear that Valentenko either never got the message or he just didn't
understand it as he set about making sure the Amerks would remember him when the teams play in Hamilton on Friday night.

Initially, the Amerks probably appreciated him being out on the ice. He was one of the Dmen who got dissected by the pass to MacArthur for the opening goal of the game. After that though, he made sure the impression he left on the home team consisted of bruises and bumps and making himself tough to play against. Apart from numerous solid checks, he broke up a play as one forward drove to the net using positioning and force.

Later on, Mancari would take a run at him and bounce off him and could only get back to his feet slowly. Seconds later, Lapierre would score his first goal of the night.

He was a bit quieter in the thrd period but by then had already left his mark (marks mostly imprinted on Amerk forwards for the next few weeks). He looks like a quality addition to the Bulldogs blue line but hopefully he can control his force because if Hamilton gest a ref who calls everything, Pavel could spend a fair bit of time in the penalty box.

Part of the explanation why both are in Hamilton. In Montreal you could not play them as a pair whereas in Hamilton you can. Building for the future.

Hamilton lost in SO tonight, but came back from a 1-4 deficit. Lapierre was THE monster again. I think he got 2 and added an assist again. D'Agostini got 2 himself, and Kots Jr. was explosive. I think he got 2-3 points out of the effort tonight.

Halak was pulled after the 4th Amerks goal. Danis came in and did pretty fine thank you.

Lapierre and D'Agostini both should be here and Grabovski and GL should not.

The Bulldogs beat Lake Erie 5-1 tonight. Kostitsyn, Milroy, Ferland, Archer and Lapierre with the goals. Lahti, Manlow and Urquhart with 2 assists each. Danis was in net.

Hmm, apparently it was 6-1 (AHL site was being dumb). Ferland finished with two goals.

Danis stopped 28 of 29 shots.

Hamilton's going to have a good team this year. They may actually have a shot at a repeat, depending on how the goalie saga plays out in Montreal.

The Marlies actually do have a decent club this year. Especially if Stralman and Kronwall stay the whole season with them. Our next game is against Lake Erie again.
