Default The Current 2009-2010 Cap Thread

For the upcoming 2009-2010 Season.

Players Under Contract:

Forwards

Scott Gomez - $7,357,000

Mike Cammalleri - $6,000,000

Brian Gionta - $5,000,000

Andrei Kostitsyn - $3,250,000

Georges Laraque - $1,500,000

Travis Moen - $1,500,000

Glen Metropolit - $1,000,000

Max Pacioretty - $ 875,000

Sergei Kostitsyn - $817,000

Guillaume Latendresse - $800,000

Maxim Lapierre - $688,000

Kyle Chipchura - $500,000

Total: $29,287,000

Defencemen:

Andrei Markov - $5,750,000

Roman Hamrlik - $5,500,000

Jaroslv Spacek - $3,833,333

Hal Gill - $2,250,000

Paul Mara - $1,675,000

Josh Gorges - $1,100,000

Ryan O'Byrne - $ 942,000

Total: $21,050,333

Goalies:

Carey Price - $2,200,000

Jaroslav Halak - $ 775,000

Total: $2,975,000

Grand Total - $53,312,333

Restricted Free Agents - Qualified Offers Given (Last year's Cap Hit):

Tomas Plekanec - $1,600,000

Guillaume Latendresse - $ 850,000

Matt D'Agostini - $ 500,000

Gregory Stewart - $ 492,000

Total 2008 Caphit $4,385,000 - Qualifying offers are given at a 10% increase.

Summary:

The Habs have Grand Total - $53,312,333 already committed to 21 players under the Cap next year.

12 Forwards under contract

7 Defencemen under contract

2 Goalies under contract.

The cap is $56,800,000 for 2009-2010. That leaves the Habs about ~ $3,487,667 of cap space left but still need to sign Plekanec, D'Agostini and Stewart.

Something to note:

Bonus cushions: Price and Sergei Kostitsyn both have bonuses. If those bonuses are paid for games played they are not counted against the cap. Under this rule, the Habs would have a "bonus cushion" of $1,615,000 which would increase the cap space available to ~$5,103,667.

Madman.

Someone did their homework. Rational thought.

Based on one key assumption: UFAs will sign in Montreal.

Let's see if it happens.

I am hoping that Gainey can talk to both Gaborik and Hossa and say, we want to sign you two as a pair. That would mean the Habs were very serious in contending no?

Hmmmm. The Selanne/Kariya arrangement. Same agent helps.

I'd love it but we're dreaming. I'd be ecstatic if we manage to sign one of Hossa, Gaborik or Havlat.

That would be nice... then add Beauchemin and another decent Dman and we could have a pretty good team.

BTW, I didn't include him as he is on a two-way but Ben Maxwell is signed for a cap hit of $850K if he makes the club.

Yes, I think it is a dream too but they have the same agent. It is a matter of selling. I would be so proactive and sell the two on the idea of being legends in what Gomez called the Mecca of hockey.

Seriously, a healthy line of Gaborik-Gomez-Hossa would match up against ANY in the East. Crsoby/Malkin included.

If Gaborik could stay healthy that would be a spectacular line... and very solid defensively too.

We are at the mercy of players who didn't play here last year. Great time to be Habs fan? Only time will tell. There is a real possibility that there will be a lot of pissed off people come midnight tomorrow.

It is come to the point where we are living on hope and speculation.

Tomorrow, this forum is either going to be VERY happy or VERY dissapointed and pissed.

My guess is the latter. I have no faith in Gainey making anything positive out of UFA's. This offseason will be a bust if he doesn't sign one of the big three wingers and/or both Sedins.

It should be interesting, I just hope there aren't too many Habs fans making the big plunge of the Jacques Cartier Bridge tomorrow.

Keep your cheery disposition out of my Cap thread.

We know the long shots. Having congenial douches consistently pissing on peoples parades is annoying and you do it in every thread. As you know I have no issue with dispatching you.

I think the latter too. Doesn't mean people have to be dicks.

One of these years we have to have some success on the free agent market... I really hope it's this year.

I don't think anyone is being a "dick." Rationalism is a great tool to live by. I hope for the best, but my expectations are low.

Who knows something could happen that hasn't happened in nearly 2 decades.

Bob needs to sign a big name tomorrow at all cost. I don't care anymore. The Gomez deal will look a little better if he does. He'll also need to address of Dman or lack of. He's got lot's of work to do.

Signing Koivu as the number 2 centre, and bringing in a scorer would be solid IMO.

Nice constructive post...

As much as I would like Koivu back, I think Bob burned that bridge. I would like to see a prolific winger and maybe Kovalev.

More so I want to see our defense shored up.
