Re: West Coast Cats
As for Wehave's antipathy to the Olympics, his views are consistent. He cheered against us in 2002 because he wanted Pat Quinn a Maple Leaf to lose. He prefers a Stanley Cup so he craps on Olympic Gold as if somehow they are mutually exclusive.
Would I prefer a Canadiens' cup to Olympic gold, sure because then I could gloat for longer but I'm greedy and want both.
Club support divides people. I am not part of the local hockey community because I do not cheer for the local team. At the office, I don't hide my antipathy to the Cannots but I downplay it, although my secretary knows my true feelings re the Cannots
This time, I feel I am part of the hockey community, everyone wants the same thing, we are all flying flags off balconies, wearing Olympic fan gear. This is not just a city's team, it is a country's team, it is all of our team.
I guess because the Olympics are in Canada and in my city, I feel differently than some but the excitement is palpable, emails from other lawyers have new tag lines like "Go Canada Go", malls are full of stores with signs and flags, these are our games.
In 1976 and 1988 we didn't win gold at home (although in 1976 we had swimmers that should have won but for East German cheating) but officially no golds. Back then, we were just there to have fun, why keep score, just show up and hope not to embarrass ourselves.
Now we are there to win. This is our moment to shine.
Yes we have protesters and people like Wehave who complain that the money should have gone to health, education etc, they will always be around.
If I thought the money spent on the Olympics could be spent on health and education and solve all problems for 20 years, no more wait times, no more lack of access to programs of choice like french immersion, Montessori etc, then fine, fund them instead of the Games. We all know however that is but a pipedream. Even if we tripled spending on those two areas, some would find reason to claim it wasn't enough.
For those who do not like the games, fine, that is your choice. Don't watch, complain about everything, that is prerogative. It is only two weeks out of your life. Let the rest of us enjoy them.

Re: West Coast Cats
No, they do not clear the sidewalks or streets for that matter. It costs too much money. When I moved here from Montreal, it was the first thing that I noticed after a big snowstorm. I have heard that the service that Montreal provided in the past is no longer the same too, based on it costing too much money.
