2019-20 Hurricanes Prospects and Checkers Thread

Charlotte is probably going to need a few more AHL vets before it's all said and done. That roster took a heck of a hit over the summer.

I like the way they’re going about their business, with a bunch of players on AHL contracts. Gust’s signing gives them 5 forwards and 7 total on AHL contracts. The Canes only have 43 of their allowed 50 players under contract.

Yeah, nothing wrong with that and the prospects can certainly learn from guys who have managed to hang in there and forge successful careers in the minors.

Suzuki signed his entry level contract. He gets $832,500 in the NHL, $70,000 in the AHL and a signing bonus of $277,500.

Yup ... nice to have him locked in on an ELC. He'll head back to Barrie relatively soon, but I've heard good things about his camp so he's off to a good start. I'm told that the Canes anticipate Suzuki playing two more years in the OHL before shifting to the pro game.

Watched the Inside the Storm episodes last night during the intermission breaks showing behind the scenes pre- and post- draft activity.

Scouting group were all very high on this draft pick. Were doubtful he would even be there when their time came.

Saku Maenalanen signed with Jokerit in the KHL. He had played for Karpat in the Finnish League before joining the Canes.

Former Canes prospect Tommi Kvisto is also at Jokerit. He was drafted from Red Deer in 2009 and split the 2012-13 season between Florida and Charlotte before going back to Finland.

Carolina retains Maenalanen's rights thru the end of the 20-21 season. To the best of my knowledge KHL contracts no longer allow for a player to bail in mid-season for an NHL opportunity without release. So this puts Saku with Jokerit for the full season. There was a lot of speculation that he would return to Karpat in the Finnish League, but I'm sure he's making more in the KHL. He's not that far off the Canes roster right now, but I suspect his eventual return is unlikely given the other young guys coming through ... Geekie, Gauthier, Kuokkanen ... most of whom have the added benefit of also being able to play center.

Yeah, he's gone folks. There is plenty of other guys in the system that can do what he does. Thank him for the solid contribution last season and wish him well.

Interesting that several former Checkers who left for "greener pastures and bigger opportunities" ended up on waivers today ... Patrick Brown, Andrew Poturlaski and Dan Renouf. I really thought Brown blew it by moving on. He could have been in good shape to play the Kegger role for this club this season and would have still been Captain in Charlotte. The other two were out of chances here anyway, more than likely.

Zykov and Nic Roy are still hanging on in Vegas. Zykov apparently worked very hard with Vegas trainers on conditioning this offseason. Roy is still a long shot to make the roster. Chicago assigned Saarela to Rockford (this is his last waiver exempt season).

They all got paid more where they went than what they were going to get with the Canes.

Brown got a 2 year contract with a $450k AHL salary in the first year and a 1 way deal in the 2nd.
Poturalski got a contract with a $350k AHL salary and a $425k guarantee.
Renouf got a 2 year contract with a $275k AHL salary and $325k guarantee in the first year and a $350k AHL salary in the 2nd.

Speaking of McKegg, he got a 1 way contract for $750k. McKegg was on the Canes roster for 78 days last season and counted $357.5k against the cap. Brown is making more than that this year.

Yeah ... no problems with any of them deciding to bail. I do think Brown would have been better off sticking around, but more money is more money. Go get yours.

NOne of those guys were anything more than fill-ins, never were going to be permanent on the roster. Very serviceable foot soldiers and very responsible. McKegg had some good outings and terrific goals, which were lagniappe. Never, ever do I fault a guy going to get more money-- unless, perhaps, it's when a prized asset signs an offer sheet to play in MTL, but other than that, there is life after hockey.

Absolutely. And the the quantity and quality of the prospects in Carolina's system, this summer was a good time for a churn.
