2019-20 Hurricanes Prospects and Checkers Thread

Tieksola's agent needs to find him a slot with somebody in a better league if Karpat is going to keep him buried with the age group guys all year. He's too good for that and is unlikely to learn anything useful clubbing baby seals (figuratively) on a nightly basis.

The easy solution is for the Canes to trade for Puljujarvi so Tieksola can move back up to the senior team. 😉 Karpat is 15-1-2, so it’s not like they’re starving for quality players.

Yeah ... I'm more hoping he can get a loan deal to go play for a weaker sister somewhere ... or in Switzerland or Germany or somewhere. He's wasting a development year right now.

And on Puljujarvi, I'm thinking the longer his situation festers and the longer that Edmonton stays above the playoff water line, the more likely that the Canes or somebody else will take him off of the Oil's hands for some short of short term solution at the NHL level. Not to put any undue pressure on Foegele or McGinn but if one of them doesn't start hitting the scoresheet more often, then the Canes are going to SOMETHING at wing eventually.

I don't remember if we talked about this yet on the board or not, but the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship is being held is the Czech Republic this Dec/Jan. in the cities of Ostrava and Trinec. The logo for the tournament is of Ostrava native Petr Mrazek celebrating a win in the 2012 World Juniors. The first I heard of this was this past Tuesday night at the Canes Corner with Mrazek.

Here is a link from and IIHF story from last December that has a nice old picture of a young Mrazek and announced the logo:

Mrazek lamented the missed opportunity to see the World Juniors in his hometown.

I remember talking about the logo when it was unveiled last year. At least I think I do. But I had heard that the logo was Mrazek.

I figured we must have known and talked about this way back last year. Anyhow, it was fresh on my mind with all of our talk about some of our players maybe playing on World Junior teams and with Mrazek and the Big Rig bringing it up again on Tuesday. That pose sure looks familiar :)

You know what? I know Mrazek isn't exactly the best goalie in the league, or even in Carolina's division ... but the guy might just be the perfect goalie for this team and this fan base. It reminds me strongly of how hard Arturs Irbe clicked once he settled into the Hurricanes' crease back in 1998. Archie had a couple of dominating seasons for the Canes, but mostly he resonated because he was a fighter ... and kind of a lunatic. Mrazek has a lot of that same scrappy kind of crazy and this market loves it.

I was thinking this exact same thing......Maybe we will play better for Reimer at some point, but last year's combo might have been perfect. Fire and Ice.

Nov 16 @Hershey L 2-1 Forsberg with the loss (35 saves). McCormick with the goal

In her latest Prospect Watch column on The Athletic, Sara Civian says that Ryan Suzuki could be back for Barrie’s 12/17 game against Kingston.

Tom Gulitti on nhl.com has an interesting article on Checkers coach Ryan Warsofsky. He still talks to Vellucci almost every day, more often than speaks to RBA or Waddell, which is about once a week.

But the most interesting thing to me is who his role model was. Their next door neighbors are his godparents and their son has had a fair to middling coaching career. Mike Sullivan.

Tieksola has been loaned to Hermes in Mestis.
I let out a little whoop when I saw those tweets. That's a kind with real offensive promise and I'm thrilled to see him get a move to a team where he can play against older guys and not waste a whole year clubbing baby seals in the teenie bopper league.

Checkers last week:

Nov 20 @Lehigh Valley L 3-2 Ned with the loss. Casey Bailey and Hunter Shinkaruk with the goals

Nov 22 @Lehigh Valley L 5-4 (OT) Forsberg with the loss. Gauthier, McCormick and Bean x2 with the goals

Nov 23 @Wilkes-Barre W 1-0 Ned with the 22 save shutout. Priskie with the goal.

4 home games this week, Tue and Wed vs. Cleveland and Sat and Sun vs. Providence. Checkers 17 points in 17 games has them one point from dead last in the AHL Eastern conference but with several games in hand. This week will be a big one.

Rees is already posting career high numbers, and he's played all of 17 games. The kid has either taken the biggest of leaps forward in his development or is on one of the most epic sustained hot streaks of all time.
