2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

Back to the person with the biggest impact... give him a few more years in the org and we might say Eric Tulsky.
Yeah ... this is fair. We tend to overlook the impact of the scouting and strategic planning people in favor of the GMs that hired them. In truth, 90% of Francis' lasting impact as a GM probably boils down to the day he convinced Eric Tulsky to work for the Canes.

Francis was an early adopter of analytics. Before hiring Tulsky, he hired Darren Yorke as his personal analytics guy.

That's about the only thing the guy was ever ahead of the curve on. It's what got him the gig in Seattle, 100%

Yep. Seattle hired Alex Mandrycky before they hired Francis. There is no way Francis would have been hired if he was an analytics dinosaur.

He said AND WE MIGHT HAVE A TROPICAL STORM OVER THE WEEKEND. HURRICANE SEASON STARTS JUNE 1 BUT THE CLIMATE DOES NOT KNOW THAT. SMILEY FACE

Too damn funny. Loved the Garret Morris skits!

80% chance of tropical storm forming off Florida but no projected path yet.

All the National Hurricane Center is saying is that it may bring heavy rain and tropical storm force winds to the Florida Keys, Bahamas and southeast Florida in the next day or 2. They have issued Gale Warnings for the Keys and Bahamas.

Arthur be thy name...
6th year in a row for a named storm before the start of hurricane season.. used to be once every 2-3 years.

It was pretty windy at my daughter’s house in Wilmington this morning. Hit a few sprinkles on the way home.

It, Arty, was mainly a rain event for us (Neuse River & Adams Creek) we got almost 4" but winds were under 20 mph mostly. There has been almost a moat around the yard but as we're higher (by a foot or so) so the yard has not been a problem.

Another high profile departure from Sports Illustraed but this appears to be voluntary. Michael McCann, who is their legal analyst, is going to Sportico, a sports business online startup from Penske Media. They own Rolling Stone, Variety, Women’s Wear Daily among others.

The Belmont Stakes will be run on June 20, 2 weeks later than originally scheduled and as the first leg of the Triple Crown races. It will be run in an empty racetrack. It will also be shortened from the traditional 1-1/2 miles to 1-1/8 miles, making it the shortest of the 3 races. The Kentucky Derby is 1-1/4 miles, the Preakness is 1-3/16 miles.

The Derby and Preakness had been previously rescheduled for September 5 and October 3, respectively.

Lance Armstrong doing a 2 part interview with ESPN starting this weekend. Still wonder why he picked Oprah to talk about his doping in 2013. Maybe he figured she would not be hard on him.

Note sure about the interview part, but there's a 2 part 30 for 30 documentary starting this weekend. Two segments, two hours each. Not sure I'd trust Lance to honestly tell me the time of day, but I'll probably give it a look and bail if it turns into yet another redemption attempt from a guy who can't be bothered to even apologize to the hundred of people he screwed over.

For anyone wanting a live sports option later in the day, ESPN will broadcast/stream soccer from Costa Rica over the next 4 Saturdays at 10 pm. All matches involve Deportivo Saprissa, the most successful club in Costa Rica.
