Bout time. They've tanked HARD of late and may as well go with anybody who has an actual upside.

Question how long before Bill Peter's is axed?

It’s only 11 games into his 2nd season and he’s coming off a 50 win season, albeit one that ended with a first round playoff exit. I think he’s safe for a while, unless they fall way behind. They’re only 1 point out of 3rd.

Peters is looking pretty iffy in terms of player management with Neal doing so well in Edmonton, but that's press driven. Calgary has a lot riding on playoff revenues though, so if they are scuffling after the Holidays I expect old Wild Bill to catch some real heat.

Ducks acquire dman Erik Gudbranson from the Pens for forward Andreas Martinson and a 2021 7th round pick. Martinson is 29 and has played 152 NHL games with Colorado, Montreal and Chicago but was playing for the Ducks AHL team.

They needed a D man and have come up empty on a couple of options since they struck out on Faulk in training camp. Gudbranson remains one of the worst D-men in the league according to the stats nerds. Big but otherwise fairly useless. Still, he's a warm body with NHL experience ... I guess.

The rumor mongers has decided that it would be him or Johnson traded to the Ducks. Johnson is cheaper, with a $3.25 million cap hit compared to $4 million for Gudbranson. But Johnson’s contract runs until the 22-23 season. And who wants 4 years of him?

Who wants anything of either of them? They're both garbage.

Nic Roy scored his first NHL goal in his first game for Vegas last night. He picked up the puck at the red line and split the F with a pretty good burst of speed.

Good for him. I think he's eventually going to make a solid checking center who can produce a little offense out of himself.

Devante Smith-Pelley has signed a 1 year contract with HC Kunlun Red Star, a Shanghai-based team in the KHL. That roster is littered with has beens and never wases; former first rounders Gilbert Brule, Wojtek Wolski and Griffin Reinhardt, former Checkers Andrew Miller, Jake Chelios and Jeremy Smith and other former NHL players like Brandon Yip and Andrej Sustr. The coach is former Thrashers coach Curt Fraser.

Chicago trades Brendan Perlini to Detroit for Alec Regula, Detroit’s 3rd round pick in 2018. He’ll stay with London in the OHL. Perlini signed his QO over the summer and is on a 1 year, $874.1k cap hit. The Wings have to make a move, they’re about $24k over the cap. Hopefully, Evgeny Svechnikov isn’t the casualty so he can play against his brother on Friday.

LeBrun tweeted that the Preds have signed Roman Josi to a 8 year extension with a AAV north of $9 million and a full NMC. He’ll be 37 in the last year of it.

Josi’s contract has a AAV of $9.059 million. It’s front loaded with $33.75 million in signing bonuses over the first 4 years. His salary is $750k the first 2 years and $1 million in the 3rd. No bonus in the last 4 years, just straight salary.

Josi is crazy elite so that money is fair. Glad the Canes have all of their top 4 Dmen locked up for a while still. Dougie won't be at that salary level on his next deal, but $7.5 million per might not be out of the question if he continues to increase his goal scoring every single year.

The dream is over, Evgeny was sent back to Grand Rapids today.
