2020 NHL Entry Draft

how do teams like LA, Tampa, Canes (and others) go through cycles of being elite, then tanking and drafting franchise stud players, and then back to elite again, and then tanking and getting more elite players again.

while we are stuck in the middle...

oh yes, then there’s Edmonton-Buffalo-Florida that are the complete opposite
We've been stuck in the middle for almost 25+ years now, and will for probably another 25. We lose to pens, we draft #1, then we might have a reason to be optimistic. You know how many years I have been saying that Rolex? I had no wrinkles and no grey hairs on my balls when I first started saying this team has no direction aside from being middle of the pack.

Depending on who's been taken before our pick at 9, I would seriously consider drafting Askarov.

Not even joking.

To me, he's the next big thing. What he's been doing at his age is downright incredible.

In the meantime, here are the results from Phase 1 of the 2020 NHL Draft lottery.

8. Buffalo Sabres.493*6.5

Ottawa and Detroit with the big whiffs. Great to see if you're a Habs fan.

How will Phase 2 of the NHL Draft lottery work?
A second lottery drawing will be held on a yet-to-be-determined date between the qualifying and first rounds of the 2020 NHL playoffs.
Here are the rules of the Phase 2 lottery drawing, per the NHL:
  • Phase 2 participants will include all eight teams that do not advance from the Qualifying Round (or the teams that have acquired their first-round picks).
  • In each Phase 2 draw, all participants will have the same odds.
  • Following each Phase 2 draw, the winning team will be assigned the corresponding top three selection in the 2020 NHL Draft and, if another Phase 2 draw is necessary, that team’s numbered lottery ball will be removed.
  • When all Phase 1 and Phase 2 draws are completed and the top three selections in the 2020 NHL Draft have been awarded, the remaining selections in the top 15 will be assigned to the 12 teams that did not win a draw, in inverse order of their points percentages at the time of the pause in the regular season.

Not for me.

The second we traded Subban for Weber in 2016, it told me everything I needed to know. We were going to play to win now and that was cemented when we signed Price to his deal a year later. Those two moves alone guaranteed a decade of mediocrity.

Drafting Lafrenière isn't going to change anything because we have $18M tied up over the next 7 years in two players on the decline. And even if they have trade value (I'm not of that opinion), Bergevin would be all be tying his own noose for his job here. It is openly admitting that his way of building a team has a been a complete failiure. The only way we could have overcome those two contracts is if we were the best drafting team in the league since 2016 so that we could have an influx of new, cheap prospects in the lineup.

there will be a good prospect at 9...hard to say who because so many mock drafts have some players at nine and the same player at 6
But if one of the teams ahead pick the goalie Askarov another good skater will drop to #9
Sanderson , Quinn should be there

Nobody should blame the Penguins, or any team in a similar situation, if they were disappointed with the format. When the 2019-20 season went on pause they had about a 99.1 percent chance of making the playoffs. They were in. Now they have to play a best-of-five series against a team that was for all intents and purposes completely eliminated from playoff contention just to make the actual 16-team playoff field. We should also be very honest about something else here: If the teams in the East and West that ended up being “12th teams in” were not based in Chicago and Montreal they probably would not be taking 24 teams to the “playoffs.” You are kidding yourself if you think they would have taken 24 teams if the 12th place teams were Carolina and Winnipeg in this situation.
Some sour grapes from Pens writer.

Yeah it is obviously dependent on who is available at #9 however if Askarov is indeed BPA I think they should seriously consider it as well.

Drafting for need has not worked out well for the Habs.

Because they consistently draft for need. One year they load up on D, the next C etc.

It's a stupid plan.
