You have had great luck with the right lottery drafts and made smart picks , excluding Matthews a no brainer

Reily, Willy , Matthews, Marner ....thats a hell of a haul over a 4 year period

You made smart moves and finally decided to start fro scratch ....at least you had a plan
we lucked out with Matthews, kinda with Marner with Phoenix being a dumbass though enough teamswould have not picked marner. But look through our line up...most players touched the Marlies and everyone raves about our health, science and training programs.

You're not wrong, but Mitch willy and Mo were hardly no-brainers. Those could have easily gone badly wrong, and those kinds of picks had gone badly wrong before for us.

Absolutely , did a great job of development and not rushing players

Have to give some credit to Babs as well . Say what you want about his player usage but he was the right coach to instill discipline and end the country club atmosphere .

But you had the luck to have those players available and made the right pick

Totally agreed Zeke and more importantly you turned them into quality players , previous regimes would of ruined them .

Part of good drafting is almost always benefitting from the stupidity of other teams anywhere outside the very top of the draft.

Rielly got picked 5th, Nylander got picked 8th and Marner got picked 4th. Among the 14 players selected ahead of those guys, only three of them ended up being a better player than the guy we got.

You might even be able to whittle it down to two depending on what you think of Marner vs. Eichel.

Carolina took Haydn (not a typo...his mother was allergic to vowels) Fleury the pick immediately before Nylander

Fleury & Virtanen at were both pretty hilarious picks right ahead of Willy. Reinhart, Bennett & Dal Colle may not have panned out as better players than Nylander, but at least they had the high-end production to justify their draft slots.

Fleury on the other hand was a big, untalented "stay-at-home" defenseman and Virtanen was a truculent leaderbean who barely cracked a PPG pace in his draft year. Both of those guys are poster-boys for the kind of players you don't use high draft picks on.

So it is Edmonton and Toronto as Hub cities. NHL looks smart waiting here. NBA players are all stuck in Florida for months. MLB initially wanted Florids and Arizona.
Stay out of the U.S.
Toronto should have been the NBas choice of place to play.
