GDT: Game 28 | NYI @ NHL Punch Dummies | 12/3/19 | 7:00p Recycled Thread Initiative

And a little bit of luck wouldn’t hurt. Don’t tell me Ron Francis or his chief scout knew when they picked Aho in the 2nd round, he would make a step change in progress between his draft day to 1-year out by dominating the World Championships at 19. Ditto Braydon Point, Pastrnak etc...

He was shaping up to be a solid top 4 defenseman, which is totally worthy of a 26th overall pick. It's not like Aho and Beauvillier were sure things either, there is a lot of luck involved on those late picks.

I agree that you never know how these player will turn out but after a while missing out on several players in round 1 and 2 is about flat out not being as good as you should be.

People wonder why our current top end talent needs to come from other organizations (Danault, Tatar, Domi, Suzuki, Byron, Armia) rather than from our organization? A lot of it has to do with just not getting it right in round one.

2008-2015 was a mess, that's why we are where we are. Can't go back in time and fix it. Drafting started getting better from 2016, and it's going to take a few years until those guys get in the 21-24 range.

The bulk of the team is 27 years old or younger (13 regulars), it's not like we have a team of veterans. We just have to keep focusing on drafting better, and do a few smart trades. There is no quick fix.

We're in better shape than we were 8 years ago IMO.

Yup, that stretch from 2007 to 2015 is what should be feeding our current roster.

Not so sure we are better off now with 3 stars in their prime back then

What is the game plan now ?

6 and 31 are vets eating cap space ...one is a clusterfuk contract

Dano , Tatar , Petry , Domi , Gally need new contracts soon ....none are core player building blocks ...who stays who goes ??? or when do you pull the trigger on a deal ???

Mistake trying to retain them all IMO

3 players doesn't make a team. When MB took over, they had Gomez and Kaberle on the roster.

DD, Plekanec and Eller were the centers. Gionta, Cole and Bourque were wrapping up the top 6. Moen and White were leading the bottom 6.

Our defense after Subban and Markov were Diaz, Emelin and Gorges. Our prospects on defense were Weber, Beaulieu and Tinordi.

We had Gallagher and had drafted Galchenyuk but our prospects were Leblanc and Dumont. That's about it for the pipeline. It wasn't as rosy as it looked like. He spend the first 2 years of his tenure trying to unload contracts without taking too much garbage in return.

Yep, and it was, mostly because Subban and Markov were awesome. Gorges was reliable as well. I feel MB has been searching for a Gorges type defenseman ever since he traded him away.

Those 3 are solid building blocks , we got zilch now

Loaded with secondary support .....missing the meat to the barbecues

Not sure I agree. Max was a secondary piece as well, and we have the same goalie, even though he's older, and it's not like you build around goalies anyway.

The only difference is that we had a young Subban back then. Supporting cast up front was way worse, especially at center, and so was our prospect pipeline.

Even if its roughly the same, or slightly worse, that's still a pretty damning record

Sure supporting cast was worse , but 8 years later we still don't have the foundation pieces

Major failure

So they dress all the former captains in white earlier knowing Weber would be in red. Weber looked like he was photo bombing a retirement home picture.
