New Canadian Politics Thread

Trudeau turns in a good debate monday and its over.

Going to be interested in seeing what bernier can do to scheer as well.

He's a classic case of the victors writing the history ...

I think you're missing the point, it's not that the bad shit he did just went away down the memory hole. It's that he was a product of his shitty era, who happened to turn into an incredible war time leader for a fight that was pretty existential for this whole western democracy thing.

Beleafer isn't huge on democracy.

I completely disagree.

Excusing all his racism and fascist behaviour. Product of the era, please.

You realize he was born in the 1870's and fought in colonial wars eh? It's really easy to look back from our perch at the end of history and imagine that we would have bucked all of the shitty societal ideals of the day, but societal conditioning is a motherfucker.

and fwiw, I said nothing about "excusing" him for his faults. Just understanding that someone born into the upper end of British society in the 1870's was going to have certain shit pounded into their heads incessantly from a young age. There's not a whole lot of morally superior individuals in our history books. Even your socialist and marxist buddies were virulent racists more often than not.

For the first time since January, the liberals are ahead of the conservatives in the poll tracker.

Nanos has the LPC at 36, CPC at 33 and the NDP at 16 with the GRN at 9.

This might be the result of Scheer getting destroyed in the french debates.

Seems so, because it’s the Bloc that benefited in the seat projections.

Nanos has liberals up to 37, conservatives at 33.

That's outside the margin of error.

Poll tracker has liberals stretching their lead.

Tracker flipped over night with new poll. Libs within striking distance of majority. Bloc gave back 5 seats, perhaps splitting the vote in Quebec with Conservatives.

Vote efficiency is everything. Well. So is the 905...

I think this is also a result of the greens fading down the stretch.

Nobody has had them in double didgets for some time.

I think that's where the liberals are getting their support from

Yep. Winning rural Alberta ridings with 90% of the vote doesn't matter. Electing hard core christians from the prairies with barely shrouded religious ideologies doesn't play in Ontario.
doesn't matter if the liberals don't pick up in Quebec.

Watching this debate, the bad news is Blanchet won the debate.

The good news Blanchet won a english debate

It's the difference between the Liberals and majority or a strong minority. Not the difference between a Liberal minority and Scheer minority. We're arguing over the scale of liberal victory, not whether or not they're going to win.

Bloc almost always "win" the english debate, because they have nothing to lose.

Yep. Gilles Duceppe always came off looking the best in pretty much every English debate.

It helps when you don’t have to give a shit about what the majority of the country thinks, and focus in on your narrow constituency.
