Federal authorities on Wednesday charged a 23-year-old sports bettor known as "Parlay Patz" with transmitting threats of violence directed at professional and collegiate athletes and their friends and families.

According to the criminal complaint, Benjamin Tucker Patz of New York, New York, used multiple anonymous accounts on social media in 2019 to make threats against athletes, including members of the New England Patriots, several Major League Baseball teams and multiple college basketball and football players. Some of the threats contained derogatory terms and racial slurs.

Patz is charged with transmitting threats in interstate or foreign commerce. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of up to five years in federal prison. Patz did not immediately respond to phone and email messages from ESPN.

On March 9, 2019, Patz allegedly sent four Instagram direct messages to an unidentified college basketball player for Pepperdine University, stating, "Your throat will be severed open with a dull knife," "Your entire family will be beheaded and burned alive," "I will enter your home as you sleep and kill you" and "Watch your back, you're a dead man walking."

In an affidavit, FBI Special Agent Daniel Nowak said the Instagram account behind the threats to the Pepperdine player was registered with an email address linked to Patz. The criminal complaint identifies similar threats made on Instagram against a college basketball player for the University of Arizona, players for the Toronto Blue Jays and Tampa Bay Rays, and the girlfriend of an Atlanta Braves player.

The complaint claims that approximately 18 messages were sent from the Instagram account @parlaypatz to college and professional football and basketball players. More than 300 more threatening messages were directed at players from anonymous accounts that authorities believe are linked to Patz.

NEW YORK -- Major League Baseball pushed back Opening Day until mid-May at the earliest on Monday after the federal government recommended restricting events of more than 50 people for the next eight weeks because of the coronavirus.

Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred made the announcement following a conference call with executives of the 30 teams.

"The clubs remain committed to playing as many games as possible when the season begins," the commissioner's office said in a statement.

Yeah, they still have a few months before camps even start, so things should hopefully be back to normal by then. What MLB/NHL/NBA decide to do will certainly be interesting to watch. MLB presumably will extend the season by a couple weeks on the end, so probably will be down to like a 120ish game sched total, assuming they can get going by mid-May. But can the NHL bring teams back after 2 months and actually get a post-season in?

The NBA and NHL are done IMO

HOUSTON -- Houston Astros ace Justin Verlander had surgery on his right groin Tuesday and is expected to be out about six weeks.

General manager James Click made the announcement. The timing gives Verlander time to heal before opening day, which had been pushed back to mid-May at the earliest because of the new coronavirus.

Verlander dealt with the problem early in spring training. His first start was delayed until March 3 because of discomfort in his right groin. He made two starts pitching 4 2/3 innings with a 3.86 ERA.

Damn.

Boston Red Sox left-hander Chris Sale will undergo Tommy John surgery, Chaim Bloom, the team's chief baseball officer, announced Thursday.

The surgery will keep Sale from pitching this season, the start of which has been delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic. Recovery from the surgery usually takes at least a year.

Sale, 30, is entering the first year of a five-year contract worth $145 million.

SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco Giants right-hander Tyler Beede will undergo Tommy John elbow surgery Friday.

Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi made the announcement Thursday. Beede's surgery will be performed by Texas Rangers physician Dr. Keith Meister in the Dallas area.

Another beauty contract by the Sox , good on them

Also , does anyone know if the players get their full salary if the season is shortened by let’s say 1/3, or just adjusted per pay period

That's presumably one of the points MLB and MLBPA will have to discuss.

On Wednesday, the AP’s Ronald Blum reported that Major League Baseball is considering "skipping" the 2020 amateur draft and "putting off" the international signing period as the sport remains in an indefinite standstill its effort to combat the spread of COVID-19.

Blum said the potential moves are "a way to preserve cash" while teams are expected to suffer significantly decreased revenues due to a largely reduced playing schedule, though the league maintains its desire to play as close to a full schedule as possible. According to Blum, signing bonuses for amateur players total about $400 million annually.
