OT: American Politics

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

sure, why not

you will notice I am not completely heartless, I cut your cord as a spot where you would likely still be able to perform sexually. If you were KB, I would have cut it at the neck.

Oh Count... *hugs*

I'm on my phone but did anyone hear that the government may have provided an undisclosed $114 billion bailout to the major banks during the recession?

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

they aren't banning peanuts, they're just making 3 sections a peanut free zone.

it isn't like jays tickets are hard to come by and this will prevent somebody from going to a game and enjoying peanuts.

all this does is give a family that has a kid with a peanut allergy and would otherwise be reticent about going to a baseball game an opportunity to go worry-free.

they have booze free zones at Edmonton Eskimo game as well

There is some significantly erroneous information in that report. They didn't give the banks anywhere near 114b. The report (whether you agree with their methods or not) chose to include money that was used to temporarily and sometimes permanently take over mortgages so the banks could meet their liquidity requirements.

It's creative accounting, but it's not necessarily a "bailout".

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

No way.

Awesome constantly available parking >>>

LOL

family member of mine had a stroke at 15.... he cant really walk well (or talk) but he was pissed off one day that he had to get picked up everyday from school so he is screw it and walked home (took him 2 hours...when normally a 15-20 min walk). Of course his parents were very worried. But I think it was a good thing.

so they gave and/or lent money to banks so that they didn't run into liquidity problems.

sounds like a bailout to me.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

I'm going to wager neither of you have read the report, nor will you.

So sure, it sounds like a bailout.

I kept looking at the title to see if this was an Onion piece.

So now, the lunatic Demon'crats want to amend free speech for those who they don't like. How quaintly Stalinist of her.

I love the fear language of "predator ooooozing". I guess she knows Soros and the well funded enivoro'menrtalist pretty well. Oh wait......

Another absurd over-the-top reaction from the resident Habs fan neo-con troll. Yes, of course, Faux News' doctoring of news reports on a daily basis, along with the phone-tapping scandals should never be stopped. Don't change the constitution to reign in the influence of big money special interest. Let us be ruled exclusively by how badly we can be used by the influence of money entirely. That's the wiser course, of course, for morons like you.

when an iraqi scumbag threw a shoe at him, lefties danced in the streets for a week.

Totally incorrect. Those weren't lefties. They were fans of the Three Stooges.

i think he's a stupid hick who thought he was making a "funny" by suggesting he'd be so upset if hopeychange got re-elected, he'd either kill himself or do something to get himself arrested.

Yeah, because joking about killing yourself or doing something to get arrested is clearly comedy...

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Change your glasses, and suddenly, it's not a bailout anymore. I guess it's only "the other side" who sees it as a bailout, then. Count is right. If Chretien did this, it would clearly be called a "bailout" and hammered at for decades by Tory supporters.
Just call the spade what it is for a change.

What you saw was an account of a study published by Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) alluding to a secret bailout. I remember this being discussed at the time, so doubt it could be considered breaking news. An article in today's Financila Post refers to the issue

In a newly released study, the centre-left group said that government support for Canadian banks from October 2008 to July 2010 was much higher than the government admitted.

All told, the study counts $114-billion worth of guarantees and financial aid for Canada’s big banks from government agencies such as the Bank of Canada and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.

And while it makes for interesting reading, most of the information in the document has already been widely disclosed by the Bank of Canada and Ottawa.

Think tank claims Canada’s bank received secret bailout

The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives is accusing the government of giving this country’s banks a multibillion-dollar secret bailout in 2008.

“The federal government claims it was offering banks ‘liquidity support’ but it looks an awful lot like a bailout to me,” said study author and centre economist David MacDonald in a statement.

When the global financial system almost ground to a halt in 2008 central banks around the world responded by extending billions of dollars of emergency liquidity to banks. The idea was that, even if individual players weren’t in trouble they would likely be curtailing lending which would have a seriously negative impact on the real economy. So the U.S. Federal Reserve, the Bank of England, and the Bank of Canada among others flooded the system with money by dramatically boosting short and medium term loans to the banking system.

You can find a story we did on the subject here. http://business.financialpost.com/2011/11/28/why-bank-profits-are-shrinking/

A weighted average of all public polls puts Conservative support at 34 per cent nationwide and narrowly ahead of the New Democrats, who trail with 32.9 per cent support. This represents a gain of 2.3 points over the last year for the NDP but a loss of 5.6 points for the Conservatives since the election. Compared to Mr. Harper’s past performances, this is a dramatic drop.

One year after the Conservatives were first elected in 2006, the party had slipped to 33 per cent in the polls from their 36-per-cent election result, a drop of three points. At the time, the Liberals under Stéphane Dion had picked up four points to take a narrow one-point lead over the Tories. The NDP had 13 per cent support, down four points.

The first year of Stephen Harper’s second term as Prime Minister had a positive effect on his party’s national support, as the Conservatives increased to 39 per cent in October of 2009 from the 38 per cent the Tories captured in October 2008. This time under Michael Ignatieff, the Liberals still picked up two points over the course of the year, while the New Democrats dropped three points to 15 per cent.

This makes Mr. Mulcair’s roughly two-point improvement upon the performance of his predecessor very similar to the gains made by the Liberal opposition in 2007 and 2009. But Mr. Harper’s six-point loss between May 2011 and now is about twice as large as his first rocky year in office.

Unlike the third-place New Democrats in 2007 and 2009, the Liberals have managed to improve upon their election result one year later. They average 21.7 per cent support, a gain of 2.8 points since May 2011.

The Bloc Québécois stands at 5.8 per cent support nationally, while the Greens are at 4.4 per cent.
And so it begins...

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Doesn't matter what the percentages are. It matters where the support is concentrated. If an election was held today the Tories would still win by a healthy margin, but they would probably be reduced to a strong minority.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

and how much of that is just a result of the NDP getting a lot of free press from their leadership convention?

Who will lead the Reform Party in the next election against the NDP #harperhistory

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

cmon. if you are over 20 years old and part of the human race, if you don't know "my generation" you're either a monk, a nun, deaf, or a complete idiot.

There's a significant difference between being aware that the song exists, and getting random lyrical references to it.

Like I said... 1 album in 30 years. If you aren't into the genre, and under the age of 45, their music has had minimal impact on you.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

and yeah...the difference between a bailout and not a bailout is....what was done with the money and where is it now?

we've been over this. he didnt threaten to kill the president. he was trying to make a "funny". it was an epic fail. he's just stupid, not dangerous.

No, we haven't been "over this". I've stated what I feel that the tough talking gun nut meant by his statement, and you've stated your mildly hilarious version of what you think he said.

Yes...he tried to make a "funny" an idiot, wannabe tough guy funny. But the "joke" was that he's tough and crazy...and would kill the President or die in the attempt if Obeezy was re elected.

It still is far worse than what Kanye said, especially considering the context of the situations.
