OT: American Politics

People that fight for equality, rights, and help the less fortunate, have morals.

People that ignore real life responsibilities/morals, or favor some over others, are wrapped up in their own self-importance and those individuals are not moral.

Quite simply the imperfection are human beings as a whole.

lol.... isnt the divorce rate close to 50% ?

Here's what I found.

According to Statistics Canada, in 1951 there were only 5,270 divorces in all of Canada. The number rose dramatically to a staggering 70,226 divorces in 2008 – a whopping 1,232% increase in total divorces over 50 years. This compares with an increase in the total population of only 139%. Divorce was a rare event previous to the first world war with a rate of less than one per 1,000 of the yearly number of marriages, says Stats Can.

Pretty much.

I honestly don't see why it's such a big deal for straight people to let the state call it marriage. Not a clue.

I'm with you. I do not see why it matters.

My marriage is not impacted by other marriages.

As for parenting...
My wifes cousin (cousin in law? ) has adopted a child with her partner.
They make better parents than most people. Broken homes, etc are probably not good for children. So we should ban divorce...i mean THINK OF THE CHILDREN!

Fascism is not natural either. It's certainly not special, valuable, or necessary.

Automobiles are not natural either. And they are not an absolute necessity for life or civilization.

Moreover, I still fail to see why if I love someone and am with them for decades I need some old man wearing weird robes and a funny hat speaking out of an antiquated book of fables and a piece of paper from the courthouse downtown in order to be an elevated form of life. That's just silly.

The argument that it is alright to strip rights from a minority because the majority thinks its okay is beyond stupid. Who gives a shit what 1.4 billion people in India think.

The Bill of Rights and the Charter were instituted specifically to protect minorities rights from the will of the majority. Legally it doesn't matter what the majority wants anymore. They can't infringe on the rights of minorities.

Just being clear.

We also shouldn't force public servants to preform a ceremony for same-sex couples if it offends their religious convictions. Simply ask another person to preform the service.

This issue has gone to the Supreme Court of Canada. No one can be forced to marry a same sex couple, or anyone for that matter. It would be a violation of the freedom of religion.

no, i'm using the fact that 1.4 billion people in india don't believe in gay marriage as an argument against those who are trying to suggest that gay marriage is something accepted by most people. which it isnt. unless you're not willing to call indians "people".

Indians also don't eat meat, have shrines to rats, have a caste system where you are slotted in to your place in life at birth and have honour killings. Sure you want to use them to buttress your view against equality?

This idea that we have to make it harder to divorce..crazy. Better idea to think long and hard if you really want to be married.

People should be really happy that women can get out of bad marriages because often they get out because of cheating, abuse, etc

Whose idea?

meaningless non sequitur. you are trying to narrow this down, to suggest that "morality" is only what we define it as here in canada. it isn't. calling me "insane" is a mindless jab.

well you love to say the west is monolithic, like South Korea mourned with "us" etc, so then wouldn't the west's morality all be the same too?

thank you, thank you, thank you for making this point. i have been waiting for pages now for someone to make it. (kinda ironic that the gay guy did it?)

no- marriage is NOT natural. which is why it was so special. which is why it is so valuable and necessary. which is why it took so long to develop. which is why it is so important to protect. if we see ourselves as mere animals, our natural state is to run out and f*ck whoever we can whenever we can to carry on the species. if we see ourselves as evolved human beings that are reflections of god who elevated us, then we need things like the institution of marriage to help us be that.

yet in the bible, there are many who had more than one wife, take Abraham for instance,w ell ok Haggar wasn't really his wife but he nailed her to create modern day arabs
