Cherry deserves this but it's ironic how he finally got fired.

He is a racist old guy. His view might had been accepted 50 years ago but not today. He should not have single them out on his lunatic rant on Saturday because a lot of people who are born and bred in Canada don't wear Poppy either. It was just justified for him to single out the immigrants as this is way beyond them. A vast majority of born Canadian don't wear one. But his xenophobic view had him only paying attention to the immigrant because he is scared of them.

What I find ironic is that he has been displaying his racist view for years against the French, European and even at that against women and he never, ever got close to be fired for it. The only reason he got fired this time is because he attacked Toronto. In Canada, Multiculturalism is not an idea anymore, it's a cult. Toronto, as a lot of huge cities, has a big immigrant base. So since he finally went and hit home with his remarks, he got fired for it.

If last Saturday, he would have ranted about the French from Quebec not wearing poppy, he would still have a job.

Also regard Ron McLean, he is just as guilty as him. I don't care about his excuses. For YEARS, he stood by Cherry and listen to his racism remarks and never objected to them.

Someone made a comment on Twitter that I thought was really true. He said he wasn't afraid that more people would turn into Cherry, he notices that we were more and more turning into McLeans. Look elsewhere when racism and bigotry are happening and hope no one notice.

I agree with your point about the inherent bias against non Anglos in the past and it still exists to a lesser degree today. This was just the last straw. Yes he’s done far worse in the past and they’ve made excuses for him but enough is enough and they knew it couldn’t go on much longer.

He was entertaining for awhile but his shtick got as old as he is. He’s 85 and people tend to give less of a damn about offending others the older they get.

Setting him out to pasture is the right move.

Where I work the workplace (warehouse) is made up of mostly immigrants. On Nov 11, I was the only one wearing a poppy (just sayin).
Not surprised - as one of the people says in the CBC article posted above, he’s a new immigrant to Canada and no one ever explained to him what a poppy is or represents.

When I was still living in Mtl, I made it a habit to go out of my way if needed to find an older veteran to buy a poppy from vs a young cadet...it got more & more difficult to find one with each passing year. That was my personal tribute...there’s almost none of them left - WWII ended 74-years ago, how much is being taught to the young generation in school? Do they even mention John McRae’s WWI poem anymore?

Cannot expect traditions to continue without consistently teaching it to each generation and society as a whole....

I’ve lived in the US a long time now, no one has the slightest clue what the poppy is or why I wear one. It’s just not part of their tradition...

He sung a different tune today. Said he knows he used the wrong words and didnt mean to imply immigrants as "you people" . Also said he was ready to apologize on the next Coaches Corner but the Sportsnet executives wanted more than that, But he didnt reveal what that was.

Probably will say something different tomorrow. LOL

Damage control mode finally kicked in. I mean, it's nice to see that Cherry actually cares enough to try that at this point ... I guess. Up until know he's done a pretty good impression of the kind of old fart who doesn't care if the world is burning around him or not.

Let's be honest, does he care or is he more worried about his pocket book and legacy?

This guy probably feels he can do this for another five years and just f****d that up.

At 85 his pocket book is loaded and can bankroll his kids and grandkids

I don't think he cares about legacy, he knows he is one of the most unique sports personalities ever in North America.

He will be talked about for many years after he passes away

Yep he's feeling a bit stung cause he loves the limelight Coach's Corner provides him. Not because of money.

Yup, and that's the problem with the concept of assuming that various iconic public figures will somehow know when it's time to step gracefully away from their public platform. They often don't have any notion of when to quit and make a hash of it trying to cling to the stage for too long. There are tons of examples across various platforms. Enough to confirm the obvious ... money and public attention are addicting and some people aren't willing to walk away until forced.

We all know the rich want to keep getting richer...this guy does care about the money and he does care about staying in the limelight and being "relevant"

Too bad that even at 85 he hasn't grasped the concept of thinking before you speak and what some comments or remarks can have as an impact personally and in the public eye.

He screwed up and instead of going off into the sun in a respectable manner and with a respectable send off he will not get any of that after close to 40 years on TV

Have to chuckle at the inevitable Ron McLean apology. Man that guy should wear a bib, what an ass kisser. I really want to see him gone, but the guy is so politically correct, he might get a stay. Ugghh guy bothers me as much as Jim Hughson.
