OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

Anyone who's worked in a hospital or emergency response before knows that we tend to make due with less than ideal resources on a regular day.

They will struggle with huge numbers of sick patients who require intubation and ICU beds.

I'm in emergency services now and we keep asking the big bosses what the plan is if someone at work gets it. We're just getting lame memos back about washing our hands and avoiding people who are sick.

He's far from the only one. I'd say this board is taking this a bit more seriously overall than say, the people on my facebook who all seem to be sharing this:

Of course, no one ever really said those things were going to "kill us all" but hey, no matter.

Worst bit is, "the media" hasn't done shit aside from report the facts and tell you to wash your hands. People, completely independently from media advice, have decided to empty every costco and wal mart of....toilet paper....

Most of them can't even justify why they are doing it.

They see some meatball with a cart full of it, wonder why so they grab more and the snowball effect kicks in

If your first instinct in a pandemic is to run to a crowded store and fight people for toilet paper, you're probably going to get it. Self fulfilling prophecy.

I think that's what's not getting enough chatter. Everyone talking about mortality rates and such, and yeah, that's ugly, but even "2%" still feels like a pretty small number.

But that's not talking about the side effects. Talking about every hospital bed in the country being full, not being able to get urgent care when you need it, having to set off "isolation buildings", never mind dealing with health care workers that are going to have to do "one day on, 2 weeks off" dealing with sick patients, things can get ugly without murdering a huge portion of the world.

Not to mention that overrun hospitals will have no choice but to postpone care for non-corona patients, resulting in some collateral deaths

We stocked up on medicines and some non perishables for roughly the same time frame

Beer and wine also. Need a full fridge if I have to be stuck at home for two weeks

Non-perishables is a good idea.

My one take-away from my brief period in isolation is that I’m going to pick up some canned/frozen fruits & vegetables.

I usually buy them fresh every few days, which meant that after 5-6 days in isolation, I was pretty much completely out.

they’ll be the same ones stampeding and rampaging thru costco and wal mart in a week or two

Wife and I are both cooks/bakers so we're usually pretty well stocked with a 10lb bag of flour, bags of dried beans, rice, etc. We have already cleared out a closet downstairs that is getting stocked just in case with dried stuff.

It's all stuff we would use eventually anyway, that basically doesn't perish. Freezer is going to be full of frozen veg and large cuts of meat (whole pork shoulders, whole sirloins, etc) that are generally cheap per kg, can be turned into all sorts of deliciousness and that again, would have gotten used eventually under non corona conditions anyway.

Only one package of kirkland TP though, so I don't know if we'll make it out alive.
