OT: American Politics

You really think the military will back him?

They won't. Elections are constitutionally mandated. I would bet money it would be a 9-0 decision in the SCOTUS should be even try.

If he tried anyway, who could you confidently say would stop him?

There are multiple fail-safes, in what his official term is, I think congress officially holds most power with elections.

Yeah, I mean, if he just refused to leave, then obviously you run into crisis territory. Technically, I think it's the secret service that would be in charge of removing him, since they in theory are only loyal to the constitution, so obviously would depend to what level he has installed his puppets into their ranks.

Not sure I'm the most confident in the fail-safes at this point. He just tear gassed people for a photo and nobody on his side said shit.

I'm sorry, what?

“Protesters Dispersed With Tear Gas So Trump Could Pose at Church,” said a New York Times story.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer issued a joint statement to call out the “photo-op.”

“Across our country, Americans are protesting for an end to the pattern of racial injustice and brutality we saw most recently in the murder of George Floyd,” the statement read. “Yet, at a time when our country cries out for unification, this President is ripping it apart. Tear-gassing peaceful protestors without provocation just so that the President could pose for photos outside a church dishonors every value that faith teaches us.”

But on Tuesday morning, Park Police sources told WTOP that this was not the case, arguing that the protesters were not all peaceful, that tear gas was not used, and that officers did not know of Trump’s visit to the house of worship.

Or

Furthermore, Trump gave no order to tear gas. Smoke bombs were used, not tear gas.

I know it's fashionable to ignore anything exculpatory but Trump didn't order anything. Apparently what happened (according to park police) was they were not notified of Trump's plan to go to the church. Once they saw it happening they pushed the crowd back but not with tear gas. This appears to be yet another time Trump went off script and just did what he wanted without notice.

Ah so they're claiming it was just smoke and not tear gas, and that it was Barr not trump that ordered it, as if thats better.

And almost a full day after the event, where everyone who was there still agrees on what actually happened.

I do think the looters and violent dickheads do need to be dealt with and that the media is not focusing enough on it. They rarely show the perspective of the people affected by these asshats.

Until the violence stops, the discussion won't continue productively.
I agree 100% ... the police should be ordered to stand down.

The clergy at the church were literally helping people rinse out their eyes... almost every reporter on scene, including ones that have covered many, many, protests all say they were tear gassed.

Yeah, I get the predisposition to believe anything you read about Trump's douchery and ignore anything else as lies, that's your prerogative. It's likely true that Trump never ordered tear gas though and even if it was used, which the police deny, it was done on the ground and not in the oval office.

yeah, it's completely different from gay rights...
it's more of a lingering structural problem with police forces....even if non racist cops went form 60%in 1967 to 95% today, it's still not good enough

as Chris Rock said, some jobs can't afford a few bad apples. and when they find a bad apple, the internal process should terminate them. full stop.

right now, they are protected by the union and management

this goes beyond just police but obviously that is the current focus

i am thinking also of those morons that killed the black jobber and the moron that killed the kid with skittles

the police is the start - and some forces will change quicker than others

So let me get this straight, the violence amongst the protesters is by a few bad apples but the few bad apples in the police means is the entire force?

Sounds like a double standard to me.

Habsy I'm pretty sure the bishop's story is in this thread...my guess is a tweet from zeke.

You are aware that there is always more to something than a tweet right? If someone actually thinks Trump directly ordered tear gas I don't know what to say. It's dumb imo.

Its more likely his off script actions caused police on the ground to panic, even though they deny it.

Get the fuck out of here with this nonsense. People on the scene (including priests) reported there was tear gas. We have hundreds of videos to prove that you can't believe a goddamn word these people are saying. Propaganda is more important than facts in this administration.
