GDT #3 - Aug 6, 8pm, SN - Hammer Down

I was going to come in here to argue on Freddy's side and then I looked at the advanced stats over the series. This is for all situations.
Freddy's expected goals against = 6.12 actual = 5
Jackets goalies expected goals against = 7.9 actual = 5

So that looks like 2 extra goals that the Jackets goalies have saved over Freddy. Considering the advanced stats also say we outplayed them in 2 of 3 games. I'd say it's starting to look like we got a net problem.

the tough opponent thing is certainly off the table. this isn't the Bruins and their championship battle-hardened core. or even the Caps. these are young guys in Dubois and Jones who are dunking on our 8-figure stars.
 
It’s fucking humiliating.

The trolls are sharpening their spears, waiting to pounce. I swear, it’s getting hard to care about this franchise. There’s no excuse this series. None.
 
I thought Marner played fine. Tavares and Willy were active around the net all night. Matty was just disinterested, that’s all. You never see games like this out of OV, Marchand, Pastrnak.

God, I hope not. If Dubas doesn't move on from Freddie this off-season, that'll probably be it for me when it comes to giving his management of this team the benefit of the doubt.
 
The usual goalie talk.

We were up 3-0 and then went to sleep. They outworked is the rest of the way and won. It’s criminal that we have so much fucking talent up front but it just doesn’t want to show up half the time.

It’s a bit of a heart problem. We’re missing a Wendel type who will inject life into every shift. Basically a really good version of Hyman, who also has been useless this series.
 
Gimme a break, man. At what point do you complain about the $11m 50 goal scorer coming up with squat against a shitty team with their garbage backup coming in cold, after their starter backup got chased? Matty is the top dog on this team. He has been extremely unclutch in every postseason. He has not shown up when we need him most.
 
You mean other than that time a couple days ago when he scored our first goal of the series?

Then there was that time last year when he scored 5 goals in 7 games playing almost exclusively against the best shut down centre of our generation. He's scoring at a 40 goal pace in his playoff career so far. Does the guy have to score at a 60 goal pace for you to stop this stupidity?

Freddy gives up a muffin a game in the playoffs. A muffin a game. His muffin/60 is 1.00

Players at fault for our recent playoff history:

- 40 goal pace #1 centreman
- or .910 goalie who gives up muffins on the regular

Literally outplayed by Holtby, Rask, Rask/Halak, Korpisaalo/Elvis in 4 straight seasons and you blame the only guy who has consistently provided offence for us in the playoffs over the last 4 years (well...and Morgan Rielly) because he's not enough of a superhero for your tastes.

Where's your boy JT been? 3 goals, 3 assists in 10 playoffs games as a Leaf now. Had the goofy turnover high in the zone that led to the OT goal. But you're here bitching about Matthews?

Yeah, I am. I’m bitching about our best player having one goal in three games against inferior competition and bullshit goalies. And bringing nothing tonight. He was completely invisible. Tavares was battling all game long. Marner was also busting his ass. The effort was absolutely not there from Matty though, sorry. Forget Freddy. He has nothing to do with Matty being a no-show. At some point, you gotta spread the criticism around. It’s a joke to say every playoff loss is on the goalie.

Marner + Tavares have fewer points in this series than Matthews. Marner and Tavares were empty voids against Boston last year.
 
And Matthews was a black hole against them the year before that.

We’ve had three decent goals so far this series. Matty, Tavares, Nylander. Three in three games. Against this shitty team. So you can talk “muffins” all you want, and the fat $5m we’re spending on our goalie, but the bigger problem is that our $40m invested in our top four guys and the rest of the skaters aren’t doing anywhere near what they need to do offensively. That money is supposed to get you more than enough muffin insurance, but it’s not even coming close.

And the buck stops at the best player. When he’s outshot and outscored in four periods by Cody Ceci, that’s a problem that is somehow escaping your attention. We only deserved to score one goal tonight (on the PP no less), so unless Freddy is supposed to let in 1 goal or less per game, we’re not going to win in the playoffs. Matthews needs to dominate Dubois, not be embarrassed by him.
 
And as for last year, going into game 6 up 3-2 in the series, Matty had 1 goal in the final two games, including zero in game 7 with a -3 in a nasty 5-1 thud. So again, focus on the games that matter and rate his performances in those. Just not good enough.

And the team overall, just 4 goals in the final three games of the series. For a roster built on offense, it’s inexcusable.
