Habs Acquire Joel Edmundson

Actually what Gordo said to Melnick was Edmundson will easily get $6M+ on open market because he’s respected around the league

I expected 3.5 because you just can’t give him more than Chiarot. It’s an internal thing. Four years is one more than of like but so be it. Hopefully he turns it around.

Not sure what you mean by that as Edmunson has been fine.

There is some substance that comes out of this interview. Nothing earth-shattering but things that are reassuring, if true.

As expected -- Suzuki, KK and Price being untouchables. Romanov is also an untouchable. The untouchable label on Price was even extended to the expansion draft -- so there goes the idea about how Price could be moved to Seattle.

Also, when asked what was missing on the Habs, Bergevin said:

«J’aimerais amener un gars avec un gros gabarit, capable de produire offensivement. Ce serait l’idéal. Encore là, ce joueur est-il disponible? Les équipes ne s’en débarrassent pas.» «Je regarde ça au quotidien.»

TRANSLATION: "I'd like to add a big body who can generate offense. That would be ideal. Again, is that player available? Teams don't tend to get rid of this type of player. I'm looking at it daily." I don’t ever recall MB ever being that specific about a need/want - “big body who can generate offense”

Who knows what he has going now, maybe he was just lowering expectations so his next move could surprise. Or maybe not...

That interview was somewhat entertaining -- good job by the host and Bergy seemed abnormally happy. New girlfriend? Riding high after a smidge of success? A bigger deal in the works that is actually exciting?

I hope he doesn’t trade Domi . . . unless the return is premium.

Thing is Bergy is stuck in the 90s. Told the host that Domi’s problem last year was that he was too focused on skill and not enough on toughness.

Dunno about that...he said essentially Domi was staying too much on the perimeter and not going into the dirty areas. “First year he played a combined power + skill game but last year more skill without the power aspect”.

BTW - I agree with MB’s assessment, IMO Domi was probably too focused on not getting penalties...but he’s a player that needs to play on the edge to be successful.

There’s also another reality that no one wants to seems to mention, Domi’s first year he was well over a PPG 35-games in with a ridiculously high shooting %, and disappeared just before Xmas (and extraordinarily ridiculously high the first 19-games) and only got something to the effect of 30 points in his last 47’ish games to end up with 72-points. Also was a complete non-factor down the stretch with the Habs fighting for a playoff spot

Yep. A rested and protected Price is whole other thing, and was pretty clear after the season that yawning chasms in the lineup needed to be filled: back up G and 5-6 D.

Copernicus can deal with the UFAs and forwards later in the offseason... maybe at the draft.

A rested/protected Price helps us make the playoffs but as we saw a month ago (as rested as he'll ever be) he won't help us put the puck in the net.

Not at $4m he’s not.

It’s what you pay a third line guy that matters. Realistically he isn’t worth more than $3m max. Because of taxes and UFA i can deal with $3.5m but there is no way I sign him to more money than Chiarot is making and screw up the salary structure for a guy like Edmundson.
Oh, don't get me wrong ... that's too much money for the guy. Heck he was over-paid on his old St Louis contract too. I just meant he's fine as a third pairing defenseman. If your GM wants to pay him like he's anything more than that, then that's on him.

We'll see. That was the CW regarding Ben Chiarot too before last season but we've seen that he's probably no worse than a 2nd pairing d-man. Edmonsun will hopefully benefit from playing with Petry.

It's not like he hasn't played with good partners before. But hey ... he's a good dude and he'll give you an effort. So, enjoy.

That’s fitting since someones nether region is getting tickled on this deal.
