Finally, there is the expansion draft, and how it relates to that contract. To be clear, the Canadiens did not absolutely need to sign Allen to an extension to meet the exposure requirements for the expansion draft. They accomplished that when they signed Michael McNiven to a one-year contract extension two weeks ago. By doing that, the Canadiens simply had to issue a qualifying offer to McNiven to retain his rights next offseason, and in so doing his availability would have met the exposure requirements set forth in the expansion rules. So the Allen signing had less to do with this than with the reasons explained above.
But, if Seattle looks at the available goalies in the expansion draft and decides Allen might offer the best bang for their buck, then the Canadiens just avoided losing someone else, perhaps a younger defenceman like a Cale Fleury or Noah Juulsen.
you sure are a MB fanboy all of a suddenThat's a good read. He makes some good points. I found this thought interesting :
Exposing Allen in hopes be gets selected thereby protecting your other players. That's downright machiavellian.
There are many other reasonable arguments in that article. This one just made me go hmmm.
Which is why I called the Allen deal below market valuei did not realize these goalies got so much money
Thomas Greiss, at age 34, got a two-year deal worth $3.6 million a year from Detroit. Corey Crawford, at age 35, got two years at $3.9 million a year from the Devils. Cam Talbot, at age 33, got $3.67 million a year for three years from the Minnesota Wild.
Random thought, what if Allen sucks here?
Then what? Seattle's not going to take him if he sucks, they'll have their pick of the litter across the league if they want a goalie.
I don't really get this. If Allen was good this upcoming season, then maybe. But a two year extension right away?
We shall see...
How about Seattle, Habs and Price have already made a behind the curtain deal to switch jerseys. now thats machiavellian. That's a good read. He makes some good points. I found this thought interesting :

Detroit, Ottawa & New Joizy all had to overpay to get players to go there. The Wild are... I don't quite understand what the Wild are doing. Trade away Dubnyk, cool. Sign a significantly worse player to replace him at almost the same money? Cool too, I guess?
None of those contracts are any good.
pretty low risk with allenYep, that's exactly my thinking.
Yeah but he's also never played anywhere else in his career. I think he'll be fine, but you never fully know.pretty low risk with allen
a known player (that has never been bad) in the prime of his career
well sureYeah but he's also never played anywhere else in his career. I think he'll be fine, but you never fully know.
Are we better with Price or Allen + Hall if he was a starter. Just curious what people would think.
well sure
he could get covid and die
but it is low risk (not risk free)
Allen hasn't been great as a starter so we would be worse, even with Hall. Plus if Allen provides the quality relief that is expected of him and if, big if, it allows Price to returns to MVP form, that would be a huge boon for us.
Primeau needs to play and develop - what if there’s no AHL season? Let’s see how he does carrying the starter load in AHL first.Primeau just sits for 2 years ?
