2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

Lumbees always claim they don't want a casino but most people doubt that. Danville voted this month for a casino. That's an hour or less from the Triangle and Triad. That might push NC to have a casino but I don't think it's likely. Also Virginia is headed to legal pot. That might also push NC towards at least medical pot.
 
Hard for me to envision a non-tribal NC casino even if the state ends up surrounded by them in other states. It was major fight just to a get a state lottery.

I don't believe for the second the Lumbees would not pursue a casino no matter what they claim.

The Cherokees are railing hard against that Kings Mountain casino, trying to protect their turf (they don't want competition).

Money talks I suppose, and maybe watching a whole lot of tax revenues go out of state will change the narrative here about non-tribal casinos, but I don't think so. Seems there is ample and firmly entrenched opposition to gambling here in NC by various groups with a whole lot of power.

He also signed a big money contract with Puma as they try to move back into the basketball market in a big way. When I was a kid, Nike didn’t exist, so you were either an Adidas or Puma guy. And Walt Frazier had a signature sneaker with Puma, the Clyde, so I was a Puma guy.
 
proposed alignment for this season no Pitt or Tampa which I thought might be included

as a kid we had Puma , addidas and around here Converse was big since David Thompson wore them in leather.
 
High top Converse chuck taylors were still big for BB players when I was a kid. I remember my father was mad they cost $7! :) Around same time I got Sears Ted Williams glove for $9. Still have it. Keep it frozen like Ted . :LOL:

Cherokees are opposed to Lumbee recognition for a simple, basic reason ... they aren't an Indian Nation. They are a collection of people of varied Indian descent who collected in a region once their tribes had been (sadly and sometimes tragically) dispersed. They are Croatan/Algonquin and Cheraw and Cherokee and Eno and Shakori and everything else, but they are not a Nation as has traditionally been required of other Tribes seeking recognition, based on lineage, record keeping and a variety of other metrics. They just aren't. If the Feds want to recognize them, then so be it, but the other Nations in the region do not have to assent. And almost all of them do not.
 
Lumbees are a federal recognized tribe since 1956 and state recognized too. The catch is they can't get federal benefits like other tribes. If they get benefits other tribes could possibly get less since the pie has one more slice. As the saying goes, follow the money. Many Lumbees are named Locklear and Heather Locklear is part Lumbee

Recognized by the Federal Government as a people group who are Indians ... not full Tribal recognition. Subsequent acts in Congress to grant full tribal recognition failed in 2007 and 2009. It's the 2009 legislation that includes the no gaming provision, but it died on the floor in 2010. As for the pie theory, the budget for the Committee on Indian Affairs is set by Congress in each annual budget. There is no fixed level of funding, and it could be changed to accommodate additional expenditures if a new tribe is fully recognized. North Carolina recognition is also vague. Originally the Lumbee were recognized as "Croatan Indians" and then the wording was later changed to recognize them as "Indians of Robeson County" ... which is a LOT more accurate. They first sought Federal recognition in the 1800s as a branch of the Cherokee Tribe, which was the start of the acrimony with the Eastern Cherokee ... since it wasn't even remotely accurate.

But you nailed Locklear as a common Lumbee name, although there are a lot of others including Oxendine, Lowrie, Brayboy (various spellings), Carter, Alford and Groom. A branch of my own family are Alfords from Scotland and Hoke Counties and are of partial Indian heritage. I'm also part Cherokee.

Hoover's VP was part native American so Harris is not first non white VP. Never been a Native American cabinet secretary but there might be one next year. Probably would run Interior Dept. I was really surprised that there are actually 574 recognized US tribes . I assume some are very small and not all get benefits like Lumbees. Also people think of inner cities being very poor but some native reservations are among the poorest counties in the US. I'm not Native in case you are wondering.

Yep, Charles Curtis. He's not well regarded among the surviving Kaw Nation folks these days. The Washington Post has an interesting article on the man that is well worth your time to read.

NM representative Deb Haaland is a member of the Pueblo Nation and is apparently being vetted by the incoming Biden administration for the Interior cabinet post. Sounds like she is very highly regarded by both Democrats and Republicans with many of the latter group saying that she is very good to work with.
 
Toronto Raptors starting home season in Tampa. I assume they will share building with Lightning Probably not playing in the awful Rays baseball stadium across the bay in St Pete where lightning played 3 years. May go back to Canada if it is allowed.
 
if you did not know Karmanos was in the running for the Tampa NHL expansion team. and Whalers might have gone to Columbus if they had an arena ready. They looked at a airplane hanger there and the rest is history.

Curtis was an enigma in his time so it's no wonder he's irregularly regarded by history. Some on the right hold him in good regard, some not so much and as you mention he's not that well thought of by his own Nation. The Dispatch had a nice piece on Curtis recent as well, although I'll skip the link since I'm fairly certain it's behind a paywall.

From everything I've seen on Haaland she'd be an excellent choice for Interior. It's a pretty divisive post with wildly divergent ideas on how to handle natural resources but she seems to be supported by a wide bipartisan chunk of Washington.
