2021 Hurricanes Pre-Season Thread

The eye test certainly doesn't make Dougie look like an elite defender, but the metrics just love the heck out of him.

It will be interesting to see if he is 100% recovered from the broken leg. He looked pretty good at times in the bubble, but just 'pretty good' is not what a 2B Dman is supposed to be. I would love to see him pick up from where he was before the injury and have that same 70 point pace, Norris trophy discussion become his new norm.

My favorite Dougie stat remains his even strength proficiency. Dougie scored 14 goals last season, 12 of them at even strength. Those 12 goals at even strength was 3RD on the Canes last season, even though he missed 21 games (31% of the season). That's just crazy for a DMan.

Svech is just oozing potential to rocket up these lists (we hope). The metrics all say he is still just scratching the surface at the the 74 point pace he had last season. Is this the year he gets to a 40 goal 90 point pace that the metrics seem to indicate could be coming?

I love Dougie at about $6-$6.5 million a season...I'm not sure anyone loves Dougie at $8.5 or $9 million per...that contract is really a difficult one to decide where it sits moving forward...the current environment, the term...maybe $6 M to start then escalating quickly in years two, three and four?

Depending on how much the market depresses contract values, I suspect you'd see Dougie somewhere in between. Hedman makes $7.8 mil or so, Letang is at $7.2 mil and a lot of relatively comparable guys are in the upper $6 mil range.

We will see just how much Dougie really wants to stay here. If he takes $7-7.5 million per then he really wanted to stay here, money be damned. I don't think there will be a lot of discount due to COVID.

I'm sure the Canes would love to see where Svech's extension shakes out at first before making the long term commitment on Dougie, $7 m sounds fair for both sides, you just hope the Canes do not let the Dougie contract situation sit out there at the trade deadline without an extension, it would be nice to put them both to bed in the next couple of months!

Today is Tom Dundon’s 3rd anniversary as majority owner. The Hurricanes celebrated by blowing a 3-2 lead late in the 3rd with Jay Beagle scoring the winner with 2 seconds on the clock. Staal, Aho and Skinner scored for the Canes, Staal and Aho also added assists, Williams, Faulk, Stempniak and Fleury also had assists. Cam Ward took the loss. What a difference 3 years makes.

Was it Sara Civian giving us the hometown Stanley Cup champ vote in those Athletic predictions or is there another hockey writer that has that much faith?

Brind’Amour tied with Ralph Krueger as runner up to the Avs Bednar for the Adams. Svech tied for 2nd in breakout player with Dahlin, behind Jack Hughes. Curiously, Hughes got 2 votes for biggest underachiever. Still no Norris love for Slavin, but Hamilton was tied for 4th.

Waiver activity...Joakim Ryan cleared. Ned is on waivers. Canes claimed goalie Anton Forsberg off waivers.

In a normal season, Ned would clear waivers. Its not a 100% guarantee that he does this time. Most teams are going to prefer having 2 rostered goalies and 1 or 2 on the taxi squad, but specific team circumstances might make it a better move to just have 3 goalies on the roster.

Given that Ned has a 1 way deal this season, the Canes are not going to save any actual money having him in the AHL or on the taxi squad. Clearly Ned would be better off actually playing in the AHL than hanging around the taxi squad or NHL team. Having Forsberg around again gives us our #3 and allows Ned to just play in the minors. Not sure what the play is with Bibeau, but that Forsberg pickup indicates to me that we definitely want Ned (if we don't lose him via waivers) to be in the AHL and that we don't have a lot of confidence in Bibeau at this point to be our taxi squad/emergency goalie.

On the flip side of that, Edmonton almost certainly wanted to have Forsberg be on their taxi squad as their #3. They don't have any other goalie under contract who has played an NHL game or looks like an NHL capable keeper to take that #3 role. Edmonton quite possibly could retaliate by claiming Ned off of waivers.

Most teams are going to prefer having 2 rostered goalies and 1 or 2 on the taxi squad, but if you are going to make a play to try to steal someone's project goalie away via waivers this is the season to make that play.

Ned has a $750k salary this year, a lot for the taxi squad. That might be the only thing that keeps him from being claimed, unless he sticks somewhere as a backup and the team has a waivers exempt goalie to put on the taxi squad. But Forsberg is at $700k, so who knows?

But Canes could make a trade to avoid him being claimed ?
Not now, Ned is out there on the wire. And suddenly Edmonton has a glaring need for a #3 goalie after we stole away their plan for that role. Edmonton's 3 other goalies they have under contract are not really good options at all, and Mike Smith isn't getting any younger.... Granted claiming Ned as their #3 and having him sit around on the roster probably not playing is a lousy plan too, so not sure what the Oilers are going to do.

Ned had to clear waivers no matter what unless the Canes wanted him to sit around on our active roster not playing games. I think this was the best move the Canes could have made, even if we lose Ned in the process. A full season of Ned not playing just to protect him does us little good. Forsberg is more likely to be capable to handle the lack of activity and be successful as a #3.

Ned will likely get claimed based solely on what Cmal mentioned, this is not a normal year and teams cannot afford to not have a #3 option in this shorty, Covid season. It would make perfect sense to see a team like the Oilers or Devils pick him up...I actually thought Louis Domingue would get picked up a day or so ago as a decent #3 option. If the Oilers can stomach paying Ned his full $750K one way salary as an insurance #3 option, he is likely gone. Forsberg...meh, been there done that, if Ned somehow clears, I was hoping he played a handful of games for the Canes this year if needed to take one more peek at the guy.

It looks like the Jets lost goaltender Eric Comrie on waivers yesterday to the Devils, so I guess you could add the Jets with the Oilers as the two teams with the greatest need for a #3 goaltender...so Ned to the Oilers or Jets in this weeks game of goalie carousel.
