OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

I expect a big boy bid on Bauer. Nothing else makes sense.
a trade with the Reds makes sense any combination of Gray/Castillo and Moustakas/Suarez maybe even Amir Garrett for a package of our kids

Or Cubs with Hendriks/Bryant
Or Rockies with Story/Arenado and Marquez
Or a much more homeless option of Seager and M Gonzales

Is he the same idiot that, during a playoff series against the Jays a few years ago, sliced up his throwing hand playing with a drone?
That's our guy. He was supposed to start game 2 of the ALCS, but his start got pushed back to game 3 because of the incident. He left in the first inning because his hand looked like this:

Not sure it even registers in the top 10 of stupid Bauer moments. He's a Trumpist and generally an idiot. Solid pitcher though.

Never liked Bauer, on a one year deal sure, but dude is a headcase. Always tinkering with his pitches against team advice, sometimes it works but often just makes things worse.

Been damn good 2 of the last 3 years, though. I would prefer to look elsewhere, if possible. FA market is pretty weak, unfortunately.

I agree with this. I want them to upgrade the pitching staff and Bauer is the biggest immediate upgrade, but not all overpays are equal.

Just in principle, signing the reigning Cy Young winner as a FA is going to result in a bad overpay. Signing the reigning Cy Young winner from a 60 game season seems like a much worse idea.

Bauer projects to be about as valuable as Springer going forward (both projected around 4.4war for a full season next year by fangraphs' combined projections), and is a year younger.

It's a bigtime add. Bauer/Ryu is a legit front of the rotation, and Ray/Pearson likely very good middle of a rotation. With plenty of options for the #5+extra starter roles.

Maybe, but he's still a dick.

I know it's fashionable around here to mock anyone not willing to set multi-millions of somebody else's dollars on fire, but there's only so much budget.

Pitchers are all wild cards, but this guy is more risky than most "high-end" FA starters. He's the top option because this is a shit year for starters. There's a fine line between really good and really bad with Bauer.

Probably gonna cost $30 million a year. I'd rather look elsewhere if he's looking for a 5 or 6 year deal.

Yeah, he definitely scares me a lot more than a lot of other top starters. Probably mostly just because he hasn't quite got the full track record to back up his likely price tag, he feels like a riskier option than even someone like Ryu, who is risky but at least had enough flaws that he came relatively cheaply.

our payroll is still very low.

we're like $60+m lower in payroll than we were 5yrs ago at our peak. Rogers is rich beyond rich. they will not come anywhere close to losing money on that investment.

It’s a lot of money for one pitcher. Perhaps it would be better to take the money for Bauer and split it between two pitchers like Tanaka and Paxton.

Yeah, if you count CBT/AAV stuff, we're up to maybe 125M or so, but easily should be able to hit, say, 160m without even really coming close to what we spent at the peak. So you could easily throw 30M at Bauer, and still have another 5M left for a utility IF option. Or trade for Bryant+Hendricks/Moustakas+Gray without forcing CHC/CIN to retain any of that money. I mean, you could do any of those options and still only have the 5th or 6th highest payroll in the AL.
