Sam Gagner and Jon Merrill of the Wings added to the Covid list late this afternoon along with the Devils starter McKenzie Blackwood. I believe that is now 4 Red Wings in total on the Covid list...so as much as it sounded like J. Staal was the first to go down via a positive test, it could have all started in Detroit. This stuff just spreads like wildfire.

Rhetorical question?
I guess what I want to know is whether or not the NHL has a supply of those Bill France cocktail napkin note pads handy. Otherwise it's hard to keep track of all this crap you make up day to day.

Why isn't a rapid test done for each team/staff before the warmup for every game. If someone tests positive, its better to get them off the ice before they spread covid around to everyone potentially at each and every faceoff. Can you imagine how much viral load can be shed by someone coming back to the faceoff dot huffing and puffing after being called for icing. Sheesh!

Apparently many teams simply didn't have the required equipment in their arenas until recently. That seems to be the plan going forward ... probably. Who knows? The league rarely talks specifics about any of this stuff.

Right. Not enough testing equipment. And it wasn't like the Feds couldn't have used the DPA to make tons of these things. They just chose not to, like this was no big deal.

Events in Columbus may be coming to a head shortly. Pierre-Luc Dubois has requested a trade. Last night, he played 3:55 on 5 shifts in the first period and didn’t play the rest of the game. Aaron Portzline said that on his last shift, he took nearly 10 seconds to skate from the far end to the bench for a line change.

Wow...this is an interesting development...

Whew ... that would be a big shift in the cable sports market. WSJ is indicating that they will shift much of the programming to USA, but it's clearly a consolidation. IIRC there was some talk of them folding CNBC into MSNBC as well. Presumably there's a fair amount of shaking up going in at Comcast/Universal.

The story on SBD requires an account but it’s free. Unfortunately, the connection keeps timing out.
If it's like the other ones, it's just the news of the pending shutdown of NBCSN with USA (and NBC) picking up "some" of the product and then a note that more will be coming ... prolly give it until tomorrow and we'll know more

They posted the story. NBCs affiliate deals with Charter and Dish Network don’t have NBCSN beyond the end of the year. NHL, NASCAR and EPL will move to USA Network. The NHL deal expires after this season and the league wants 2 TV partners.

I wonder if they tried to sell NBCSN but found no buyers at the right price.
Doubtful. A network is only worth as much as the properties/rights they own. Take away the Premier League, NASCAR, the NHL and other sports that Comcast holds the rights to and there isn’t anything to sell.

Dreger says a trade call is being set up between Winnipeg and Columbus. The Jets send Laine and center (and Columbus native) Jack Roslovic to Columbus for Dubois and maybe a draft pick. Roslovic is an unsigned RFA who just came off his entry deal and is expected to sign a deal worth about $2 million AAV. Jackets have Brandon Dubinsky and Gus Nyquist on IR, either could be moved to LTIR to free ups the cap space, they’ll be taking on a net $4.5ish million if Roslovic signs for $2 million.

Yeah ... at that point you're selling a series of carriage agreements, not a network.

I'm struck with a couple of aspects of this probable deal ... Roslovic is a make-weight, so his role here is simply to even out a trade and get a contract dispute cleared off the Jets' books, so it ain't that. This is 90% a PLD for Laine trade and I'm not sure either player is well served by the move ... even though they both have worn out their welcomes with their current clubs to one degree or another. My concerns are about Torts, primarily. He can't seem to live with DuBois because he's a purely offensive player who won't conform to his system and doesn't pay him due deference and they're trading him for Laine ... who is going to be the same or worse (from Torts' perspective). Yeah, he's more polite about it, but Laine's going to put exactly as much effort into back checking as PLD did ... which is none.

I know the guy grinds out points in his sleep, no matter the roster ... but I'm really struck with the issue that, for Columbus, isn't Torts a bigger issue than your best forward?

Woah, really? He's a great two-way C, IMO.

Tell it to Torts.

And FWIW ... the advanced stats guys seem to consider PLD a moderate liability defensively. I've always thought he was fine. He's certainly a better and more effective all situations guy than Laine, although Laine's a higher impact power play guy.
