OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

so, jabbing the mrna vaccine into the arms of old frail people may not be the best idea.

two 90+ year olds in the extended family both dead within 2 weeks of receiving their first shot. in both cases there were no underlying conditions/no other signs they were that close to the end.

a third who got it (younger, but in a bad state physically) has gone completely off his rocker (though did have covid a few weeks before receiving the shot, which could be a contributing factor).

Possibly good news especially considering the UK variant takes up over half the cases (and rising) these days!

We'd be in a phenomenal spot if it wasn't for the other potentially immunity escaping variants present out there. But this is good news regardless.

Moderna announces that they expect the vaccine to work quite well with all variants, including the scary South African one! Good news. However, they do expect a decent reduction in efficiency in the SA one and are thus planning to manufacture a BOOSTER shot to combat it.

Good news folks. Get your arms ready. We're going to be getting needles at all angles in the next 12-24 months. Seems like we'll need 3 shots at minimum but who knows what other variants are out there or will come. I'm assuming we'll need even more.

No they didnt... sixfold less effective vs the south african variant:

Also that mtl study on the oral tablet doesnt have a good saftey background.

Happy monday lol

Sixfold reduction in neutralizing titers does not equal six times less effective. The levels remain above levels expected to be protective. This is phenomenal news as there were serious fears of far worse. They're working on a booster so we can maximize protection long-term.

In other words:

After 2 doses the neutralizing antibodies (the antibodies in your blood that can block infection) are EXTREMELY high. The variant is 6-fold less susceptible to these. But because there's so much of them to begin with, the vaccines should still work. Phenomenal news.

"Should"

Better than nothing though.
It's the kind of data we wanted to see. Was the best case scenario. What a fucking miracle that the first two vaccines were fucking gangbangers. Seeing a lot of companies halt their trials because of poor data which is usually the case with most vaccines. Not many even make it to phase 2. But the first two happened to be near perfection. Science >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Johnson & Johnson are running their phase 3 trials in South Africa. Now THAT will be and interesting test on their particular vaccine as it relates to the variant. Data coming real soon!

My wife and are pretty "steady as you go" types. Don't get too high or low in times of stress. But... we're definitely getting maxed out. Watching lots more junk, eating lots more junk, letting the house get messier. So...I'll take all the good news you got!

We went through something similar. Now we've been on a spring cleaning tear in January.

Hasn't been much good news lately, but this particular piece of news eases all short-term fears. No data yet on the Brazilian variant but I would imagine the end result won't be much different. Vaccines will work just fine. Less effective maybe, but doesn't appear to be a significant downtick from a very impressively high starting point. Long-term we may require boosters for this and other variants, but for now we know that the current vaccines offer solid enough protection. We can all breathe today!

The thing is, even with all of these mutations, this virus mutates EXCEPTIONALLY slow compared to something like the flu. The only reason we're seeing these shifts is because of the amount of transmission. The only thing we can do to slow the mutations is to slow transmission... Which can happen through human behavior and will happen once the vaccination program is ramped up. Of course, that also outlines the importance of getting everyone vaccinated across all countries. Don't want to give this thing a chance to mutate enough to completely escape immunity!!!

Ya my girlfriend's family in Australia have been living normal life for ages. Most of them are in Perth, which nipped it with extreme lockdown measures and state border closures basically as soon as they saw cases. They've been mask-less, restaurants open, sporting events etc. etc. since like April or May.

Granted, Perth is one of the most isolated major cities in the world. But Australia in general has done a good job. Forcing international arrivals into lockdown hotels with security guards etc. When we were talking to her family in Melbourne during their outbreak and they weren't allowed to go 5km from their house, I thought that seemed pretty draconian. But look at them now.

Feels like it's been forever since I could feel comfortable going mask-less, or be willing to eat in a crowded restaurant. Like, back in November before the current lockdown rules I met friends a few times for wings at fairly empty bars, and even that was "living on the edge".

Thread.

This is with a positivity rate of just under 10% across the country so the virus is circulating WIDELY. And about half of the cases there are the UK variant (and growing). More good news today! @Aberdeen

Monday, Wednesday, Friday = Preston provides optimistic findings on Covid.
Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday = I want to kill myself before Covid does.

See y'all here in a few days.
