Habs Season Thread: 2023-24 Season

how about continuing the good play , thats a start to earning some trust with fans
It wouldn’t matter. He could get two shutouts in a row and have a sniper score with a good shot and you’ll find something to complain about that he should’ve had it. You just hate the guy.

100% incorrect

Most of us hated the contract , he was never going to earn his money and was going to be an albatross

It just happened that his contract has been bad from day 1.

The silly play in , call it what you what, for me it’s an embarrassment how you give a 24th team that had zero chance of the playoffs a lifeline .

So why isn’t Price continuing his good play from the playoffs?

Why so many muffins and playing below average and being so inconsistent

Most of us are calling out Weber , Price , Chariot, Dano who simply are playing below expectations

He needs to be in the upper tier of goalies not outplayed by 20+ netminders

It’s 3 years now can’t be praising him on previous stellar play years ago or media hype

Yeah, he’s been not good from day one. That’s the issue. I expected a drop-off after year 4 or 5, not immediately after he signed the deal. That’s been disappointing to say the least.

18-19 season .918 sv % in 66GP, Habs don’t even come close to hoping for playoffs without Price.

What were his stats. the following season?
Not very good last season (.909), but your initial statement was “not good from day one”...

FWIW - 18-19 season (when goalie equipment changes were implemented) was when he first needed an early season reset.

Didn’t his extension only formally start the season after the year he signed it? That’s my recollection. If so, I was correct that he was bad from day one of the extension’s start.

Yes, but this is Year 3 of his 8-year deal. Year 1 was 18-19 when for the first time he needed the early season reset, then was very very good mid-Dec onwards (.930’ish iirc).

He signed the deal after the 2017 playoffs vs NYR, with 1-year left on previous deal (signed just before UFA market open July 2017)

He has not played like a $10 million per season goalie since the extension formally commenced.

Not sure any goalie can play like $10M (10-12% cap hit) one in this day and age, unless they’ve got an elite D in front of them - game is too fast, players never stronger armed w one piece rocket launchers. Simply not a goalie driven league anymore, days of Hasek performances are gone for good.

However, Price cannot under any circumstances give up beach balls like he’s been doing..simply unacceptable for someone of his pedigree.

And I think that was the point of most of the people who objected to the extension at the time. That no goalie is worth that given what the cap was/is. My view was that because of how poorly they had drafted and developed players, the Habs had no choice but to cave to his demands. But in hindsight I was wrong because he really has been poor for almost the whole extension so far, which I didn’t expect.

What does almost whole mean? He was elite for 2/3 of year 1 + playoffs in year 2, but had a poor 1/3 Year 1 + 1/4 of Year 3 and subpar Year 2. That strikes more as he’s been below avg 50%-60%, thus far - depending on how playoffs are weighted.

Even at 50%, still doesn’t justify ROI for 10-12% of cap hit, however, what if he turns this season around and the team goes on a long post season run with Price performance in line w his last 25GP in playoffs? All of a sudden it’s looking like 70% return, that’s why IMO it’s too early yet, and this season is so crucial..

That is scary that we have 5 more years left. Just imagine what will be in 2 years from now.

Every wrote Fleury off and said he was washed up and done. Look at him now. Price will get his change of scenery, dominate and it’ll be another great goalie pushed out of this toxic market.

There are few competitive teams that have 10.5m salary cap right now, let alone that will spend it on a goalie. Even the last 2 years, his total salary is 7.5m which will be incredibly high for a goalie his age and putting up his numbers. He's here for the duration of his contract.

Jimmy Waite recently compared the two — called Fleury “rubber man” very flexible, with very little injury history while Price is constantly stiff, the result of a series of injuries to his knees, hips, back....Waite basically said Price has to battle thru pain at this point in his life.
