You still have to think Poile and the Preds will have a fire sale on some of their guys like Ekholm/Granlund etc before the trade deadline and will likely see a drop off. If Columbus continues to sputter it could be Chicago all by their lonesome as the fourth seed in the division.

Some early reports out of Florida have Ekblad with a serious enough knee injury to a point that it could be season ending.
Ekblad is out for the year with a broken leg.

Congrats to Buffalo on blowing a 3 goal 3rd period lead and losing to the Flyers in OT tonight. The streak lives on!
True or False? Buffalo should have drafted Svetch (from their point of view)? Dahlin has not been good in the short spells I have watched.

I would have taken Dahlin too in that same position. He looked like a super elite talent. It's hard to evaluate him fairly at the moment given just how brutally horrible Buffalo is. He is still really young.

Svech had the advantage joining a team that had a solid base and was about to be juiced by an owner willing to spend and a coach who was about to change the entire culture of the franchise.

I'm just enjoying the Skinner contract after so many Buffalo fans explained to me and my daughter in the first game that Buffalo played at PNC after that trade what a dumb move it was for the Canes to trade him away to Buffalo for draft picks. Yeah, big mistake there by the Canes 😄

Dahlin reminds me so much of Victor Hedman. I remember how underwhelming he was in his early years, but you could sense it under the surface. Dahlin's got that same thing. Sadly (for the kid), I'm not sure his team will be anything like as well constructed around him as Hedman's was.

At the time, I remember how upset I was that we basically got nothing for Skinner, but it reinforced Roddy's philosophy on having every player commit to his vision of how each member of the team should play. Skinner lit it up in Buffalo prior to his renegotiated contract and has quickly flamed out. I can't blame the Sabres for taking him, but I can be gleeful for them re-signing him to a devastatingly bad contract.

I agree...he'll eventually be good.

However, as my buddy in Buffalo (who works for the Pegulas) recently said to me: "We thought we were getting Nick Lindstrom and instead we got Nick Fotiu!"

I mean, no offense to your buddy, but that comment is almost ridiculously naive. I remember Nick Lidstrom as a rookie. He was really good, especially making transitional passes, but he had spent two solid post draft years in Sweden learning his trade at the pro level before Detroit eased him in with a bunch of low risk icetime on a team that was already well on its way to being really, really good. It was the proto-Wings, not the juggernaut version under Bowman ... but it wasn't like they threw him on the top pairing and top power play units on one of the worst defensive teams in the league like Buffalo did with Dahlin. At 18 years old, mind you.

I'm not so sure Florida doesn't become easier to play against if they get Gotisbehere. He is terrible at actually playing defense and is a black hole on offense 5v5.

I'm sure the Flyers would LOVE to simply have Gostisbehere and the 2 years remaining on his contract disappear. ($4.25 million cap hit, $3.25 million owed each of the final 2 years BUT $2.25 million of that as buyout proof signing bonuses each year).

Go ahead Florida (or anyone else in our division) and claim him please. Florida does have a TON of cap space to work with, even before they put Ekblad on LTIR.

To be fair, I did not detect any humor either since it was from a Sabres fan. I must understand that even they will have decent people as fans.

Cool ... sorry to your buddy for my complete lack of pickup, then. Just sounded like something you might actually hear from Sabres fans.

He's not a Sabres fan. He just happens to live in Buffalo and does consulting work for the Pegulas.

Unfortunately, he's a massive Rangers fan. (Actually, not completely unfortunate--during non-pandemic years, he and I do a "home and home" and go to Canes-Rangers games together at PNC and MSG.)
