OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

The fact that one is more transmissive than the other just means that if a population is taking action to limit spread of the more transmissive variant, those actions will likely result in even greater reduction of the less transmissive variant. Much like all of the preventative measures we've been taking for the last year led to the easiest flu season in memory. I don't see this as especially great news beyond the fact that if we can keep B.1.1.7 in check (TBD), we can also control the others.
this is not my take. basically P1 will only thrive where B117 is not. and B117 is less deadly (*edit* and has less immune escape/better response to vaccines), so it's better to have B117 than P1.

please call this variants by the country names

my brain is still getting use to the name change of oxford to AZ

That's not correct. P1 will spread from an infected person to another person just like any other sickness. It doesn't matter if there is another variant around, except to the extent that people are doing things to prevent spread. These variants are not meeting in an arena somewhere and waging a battle. However, if a population is taking measures to control the more transmissive variant, that will likely wipe out the less transmissive one as well.

Original strain is already almost wiped off the map in most countries. The virus that has an advantage over the others will take over hosts that the less transmissive variants were going to otherwise infect. Rt on the original variant is under 1 in most countries which means it is receding as each person is infecting less than one person with that variant. Just have to look at the raw number of daily cases on the original strain and you'll notice it's light years less than it once was. They absolutely are battling it out to infect others.

Granted, it will take a long time to wipe P.1 off the map since it's not like it's waaaay less transmissive than B117 plus it has immunity escape properties that may give it an advantage to reinfect or infect anyone vaccinated. So maybe it never happens. But for countries who are starting their vaccination programs or won't be vaccinating everyone for awhile? This is great news. Because P.1 won't be the primary target in most countries. It's B117.

Is there evidence that someone who has recovered from the more virulent strain is immune from the other?

That's not a clear takeaway from that Italian study. And I thought reinfection was one of the main concerns with the Brazilian variant.

I think the important point is that a person exposed to both P1 and B117 is more likely to be infected with B117. and since B117 seems to be both less deadly, and more responsive to vaccines, this is good news.

Lots of good evidence that if you're infected with P.1 (or given boosters for P.1 or the SA variant with the E484K mutation) you're immune to the original strain or B117. Reinfections are more common for any of the variant with that E484k mutation including the Brazilian, south African etc. Wasn't part of this study in particular.

Tldr: if you're infected by B117 or the original strain your immunity isn't as strong on P1. If you're infected with P1 your immunity is strong to any known strain out there. But immunity is not an all or nothing thing. There will always be some.

I, for one, appreciate your two line summary of your three line statement.

Good news is I can still golf.... I’m not sure we quite understand lockdown yet

I mean, golf is a somewhat solitary outdoor walk, so if anything can be open during a lockdown, that makes sense. But yeah, I bet a lot of Europeans would be aghast at what we are calling "lockdowns". France's new lockdown they've relaxed things a bit, so you apparently don't need a form to leave your house this time. And they're letting people go up to 10km from their homes - I think the earlier lockdowns they were even stricter.

yeah we've really stretched the meaning of the term 'lockdown'
