Around the League 2019-2023 Edition

I was told Zach would take a hometown discount because all that filthy Toronto endorsement money would make up the diff.

I definitely suggested that might be a possibility at some point. Obviously, I didn’t properly account for the stupidity of NHL general managers.

I don't think it's a terrible contract. I was hoping for 6+ on a 7 year deal so I could laugh harder. 5.5 for 7 and 5.125 for 8 is actually somewhat reasonable. An overpay of 15-20% per year which is usually what it takes to win the sweepstakes for a UFA.

I almost don't want their draft pick because $5.1 is pretty reasonable.

More confirmation!

Betcha Dubas offered 4 or 4.5 tops.

Hopefully on an eight year deal, he didn’t even go that high. Something that starts with a “3” is as high as I’d go on that kind of term, and even then I’d have to think pretty hard about it.

$5.1 is a great cap hit this year.

We'll see how many years of that contract you can say that for.
Like all longterm contracts are designed, it should be great value in the earlier years and an overpayment in the latter years. My eye test is biased because he does indeed have feet for hands but it's hard to ignore his results. It's probably a win if he's worth 5.1 or more for 3 or 4 of the 7/8 years as long as he doesn't fall off a cliff and become unplayable immediately afterwards. NHL GMs have made worse bets than this.

His book sales will plummet. Will be forced to do BET99 spots soon enough.
Dads around Toronto and currently burning his books in a fiery rage. Can't believe he didn't sign a league min contract to stay in the best city on earth.

Losing Hyman for nothing is a big loss, but fuck this Edmonton thing is not gonna work out well for him. To hell with them though, we just got a lot softer and easier to play against and that was already our biggest problem.

Maybe Hyman is the one 30 year old UFA top 6 winger that doesn't fall off a cliff a year or two into the big contract.

Ladd, Okposo, Clarkson, Neal, Luccic... we've just seen it happen too many times for me to be interested. The odds of it not happening are lower than 50/50.
