OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

They could have also acquired JA Happ for almost nothing and then got 1 year of Berrios for half the price in the off-season.
Okay, Nostradamus. Berrios was the next best option after Scherzer, there were always going to be multiple offers, especially after the Padres failed to get Max. He may also have gone for a similar price in the off-season as there are usually more teams bidding, there's no way of knowing for sure. Although we do know for sure the price wouldn't be "half" because that's absurd.

Sure the Jays could have got Happ or Lester for next to nothing, but the whole point was to add a pitcher who doesn't suck.

It's too early to call Martin a bust, but he is heading down that path and has definitely lost value since draft day.

Ok then. Re Berrios, I’m open to seeing if he actually contributes to a playoff run this year. Some of you should understand that it a SP adds 2 wins in the last 1/3 of the season after the deadline, that’s a Cy Young level performance, but it might only add 2 wins to the team’s record.

Re Martin, skepticism is warranted as it is with almost any prospect, but most of you seem to be getting led to a foolish point of view by a guy who has some pretty embarrassing baseball takes. Control your expectations accordingly.

Nelson Cruz is a freak. Makes me wish Bautista was able to stay healthy at the end there and string together a few more years like Cruz has. Unreal.

I’m just adding a different point of view here, and I’m not saying it was a bad move, but isn’t Martin + SWR a fairly significant package for a pitcher with 1.5 years of control? And isn’t it too early to call Martin a bust?

Berrios has said he wants to go to FA. So he’s probably not going to sign an extension. So what do you think his trade value will be this off-season with one year of control? More than the Jays just paid, or less?

Last off-season, the Rays got less for three years of Blake Snell than the Jays just paid for 1.3 years of Berrios. Maybe there weren’t enough bidders?

I was torn at the time of the trade. berrios is a pretty awesome add to the team heading down the stretch. Seems to have paid off. Impossible to say how much his acquisition has impacted the confidence of his teammates. What a vote of confidence that is from management to acquire him.

I really liked Martin and saw him as a 3B partner for Bo at SS.

Hopefully we open up the wallets and keep him.

I think he would have had a similar trade value in the off-season, especially if you don't love Austin Martin. Maybe a little less, who knows. There is also the possibility the Twins decide to re-tool in the off-season and keep Berrios.

As for Snell, he's been pretty good lately, but didn't quite live up to his reputation last year, or the better part of this year. Secondly, the Rays got 4 players for Snell. We can debate whether 3 of them are particularly valuable, but the 4th is Luis Patino who I would rather have over Martin or SWR. He has an electric arm and is already starting to look good in the majors at the age of 21.

Had to know the offence was gonna dry up against the Rays at some point. Hopefully they don’t give the Yanks the lead back these next 2 days...
