How are we going to address Canada's goaltending crisis? Seeing Binnington on some expert lists is freaking me out.

Matt Murray is getting paid $6 million this season. He is owed $7 then $8 million the next 2 seasons at a cap hit of $6.25 million. That is being reduced by escrow of course, but still he is owed a lot.

That would be an ugly buyout. Not that Ottawa needs the cap room, but ouch!

I never understood why a team that poor that needed $ ($, not cap) wasted it on him. He looked so bad his last 2 years in Pittsburgh.

You have to hand it to Murray. With his two Cup wins still fresh enough in everyone's memory, he made sure to lock down his big payday. And the Sens just happened to be the poor suckers that gave him that big bag of money.

Hard to figure where the Sens will go from here, though. Nobody's going to just claim him and take on the rest of that contract. And then I can't picture Melnyk being willing to retain 50% of his salary to move him, or spending $10M to buy out the last two years of his deal.

Puzzling move to spend that on a struglling goalie when you lack cash so bad and so many young players to lock-up during the course of his deal

If I’m them, it’s kinda like who cares? So he’s a super expensive backup. You’re not competing, you don’t need the cap space for the next couple of years, and if he turns his game around, you trade him off. I’d never buy him out or put him on waivers if I couldn’t find a trade partner. So dumb.
