OT: The News Thread

Harrowing tale about domestic abuse involving a guy who used to post on the Expos board before becoming a respected sportswriter.

Details are predictably grim but overall the case provides some good insights

He used to post on the old Fanhome board when he was still in his teens, I think. He wrote a great book on the history of the Expos. But holy shit has he got issues. You can YouTube this story and there's actual footage of an incident that took place in the elevator of the couple's condo. At one point, Keri head-butt's his wife and bites her. There's also some audio that she captured on her phone when he was acting unhinged. He's got some screws loose.

What a rebel.
WTF is that supposed to mean? My point is that what I did (especially since I did it in broad daylight and not after dark) was infinitely less risky than what this girl who hopped into bed with Mailloux, a man she barely knew, did and still I got burned and it could have ended much worse than it did. And part of that is on me, just like part of what happened to that girl with Mailloux is on her. But for some reason, certain people want to treat her like an innocent waif. She made choices for which she is responsible just like I did and just like Mailloux did. Nobody gets a free pass.

I dunno, how stupid of a “mistake” did she make, really? Let he or she who’s never in their lives hooked up with someone they didn’t know all that well cast the first stone.

If she made a mistake at all, it was only that she didn’t manage to see through the front he was putting up and recognize that the guy was a complete piece of shit.

But there are plenty of predators out there that are frighteningly good at hiding who they really are.

I don't think a lot of men can really grasp the amount of things women do to keep themselves safe that they probably never give a second thought to.

But definitely you can count on if you slip up even once, you'll hear about it from some jackass who will simultaneously argue the perpetrator just made a mistake, like we all do when we're young!!

I think the mistake would be allowing herself to be filmed performing a sex act by a relative stranger. It's not something I would ever do but there is nothing inherently wrong with doing so.

but more importantly, mistake or not she is the victim and I think we should focus more on the behaviour of the perpetrator than the victim.

I'm just going to say one more thing on the subject because I really do think we just have to agree to disagree on the topic. We have gone on at lengths about the anti-vaxxers in the COVID thread, calling them out for their stupidity. Some of them have got COVID and died and then many will say they got what they deserved. Now, rightfully so we should be focusing on COVID but since these people are the victims should we not put any blame on them?

wut.

covid is a virus, not a human committing a sex crime.

and quite frankly, i still think it's sad that people when who've been victims of misinformation die from covid. it's the perpetrators of spreading misinformation based on politics that can fuck themselves.

There isn't anything legally or technically wrong in allowing oneself to be filmed having sex (and god knows this current generation films literally every second of their lives) but it isn't a smart thing to do it's a dumb thing to do because the internet is forever. You can get an embarrassing tattoo removed but not a sex tape that goes viral.

And just because "we all do stupid things" doesn't mean we can't judge. In fact, it is precisely because we've all been there that we can both relate to this woman and judge her at the same time. She doesn't deserve any free pass simply because she broke no laws. She did something stupid and potentially dangerous. Yes, we have all hopped into bed with people we barely knew. Doesn't make it any less stupid or dangerous. We were stupid. She was stupid. We aren't saying we are better than her, just that she is the same as us. As I've said, we all need to own our personal bullshit because owning it helps us learn not to be stupid the next time. If we constantly look to rationalize our behavior and deflect responsibility away from ourselves for the things that we do, we never learn and keep repeating the same mistakes over and over. So a little judgement isn't necessarily a bad thing.
