2022 Free Agent Frenzy

Necas actual pay for both of the last two seasons, including bonuses, came to $1.4 million (per season) and change and I wouldn't be surprised to see him bridged at a pretty similar payout as Puljujarvi. It's pretty normal to see guys double their entry level deals on their second contract when it's a bridge deal ... so $2.8 mil is not out of the question. Most of the stats-based evaluation sites have him valued higher than Puljujarvi, FWIW. I've seen long term projections of $5 million AAV ... but that ain't likely right now, with confidence being so low. Looks like from a distance, most scouts still see Necas as a first line talent, despite his dip in form this past season.

So, don't let familiarity breed contempt, pretty much. He's going to get a deal and 90% of Canes fans online are gonna say it's too expensive, and it almost certainly will not actually be too expensive.
 
John Klingberg is still unsigned and he was supposed to be one of the UFA prizes. Per Seravalli, he just fired his agent.

 
Well, if the reports from February or so indicating that Klingberg wanted to look at potential trade destinations that would be willing to give him an 8 year deal (at a ridiculous AAV) were any indication, then either he or his agent (or possibly both) were bonkers. Nothing like a healthy dose of market indifference to humble a brother. The guy is a perfectly decent secondary PP man and passable puck mover who isn't absolute garbage in his own end ... but he's 29 and was fairly compensated on his last deal at $4.something million per year. I suspect he still thinks he's gonna get PAID when he is in fact going to get paid.
 
At this point, all that is likely going to be available to Klingberg if he wants to play for a contender is a short term low money deal. He might find more money with a fringe/non-contender, but even there it makes little sense for those teams to sign a Dman like Klingberg to a big money deal.

He's going to end up having to take a haircut on term and dollars for this season. Call him a victim of overvaluing his market worth in a relatively flat cap environment.

He can find a contract, but not for what I suspect he was looking for. Just scanning contenders with some cap room, I could see a fit with the Rangers or Kings?
 
Sens avoid arbitration with Mathieu Joseph and re-sign him, 4 years/$11.8 million. That’s a pretty nice bump for the 2 year/$1.475 million deal he came off of. He had 12 points in 11 games for the Sens after being acquired from Tampa at the deadline.
 
Flyers re-sign RFA Owen Tippett, 2 years/$3 million. He had 11 points in 21 games after the Flyers got him from the Panthers in the Giroux trade. He had 14 points in 42 games for the Panthers.

High quality defensive forward who still has some offensive upside. Solid deal for both sides
 
Kevin Weekes says that John Klingberg is signing with the Ducks, 1 year/$7ish million.

 
Flames avoid arbitration with dman Oliver Kylington, 2 years/$5 million. He came off a 1 year, 2 way deal that paid $750k.
 
Seravalli says the Flames and Andrew Mangiapane avoid arbitration and agree on 3 years, $5.8 million AAV. He came off a 2 year/$4.85 million contract that also avoided an arbitration hearing.

These two deals put Calgary a million and change under the cap, including Monahan's hit ... and I've got no idea what his health situation looks like, really. I do know that there were serious rumors of Monahan being traded to multiple teams last month that all came down to nothing. He's still Calgary's problem and they still can't seem to give him away. Their only remaining negotiations are for a couple of depth RFAs and their backup goalie. They really need to get the Monahan situation settled if they want to really take a swing at competing next season ... while they still have Huberdeau and Weegar under contract.
 
Devils avoid arbitration with Jesper Bratt and sign him to a 1 year/$5.45 million contract. He’ll still be an RFA next year. He came off a 2 year/$5.5 million contract.

Devils have a little under $3.3 million left and that includes Jonathan Bernier, who is probably ticketed to LTIR. They’re still carrying $2.2 million dead money for Schneider and Kuokkanen buyouts for this year and next and $250k (for 3 more years) for Kovalchuk’s recapture penalty.
 
That's pretty risky. If Bratt gets anything close to the point per game mark again next season, they're gonna have to give him a Brinks truck if they hope to get him re-signed. Still, the Devs would have gotten hammered in arbitration on that one, so I guess it's better than being forced to move a guy you like on your first line.
 
Former Cane Brett Sutter is leaving the Ontario Reign and signing with the newly relocated Calgary Wranglers. The Wranglers are the relocated Stockton Heat. It’s hard to keep track of which Sutter belongs to which father, but Flames coach Darryl is Brett’s father.

Sutter hasn’t had a NHL contract since the 2015-16 season, playing the last 6 seasons for the Reign on AHL contracts.
