Around the League 2019-2023 Edition

Thing is, the top players get top $$$$$ from several teams so lifestyle (which includes weather, anonymity, how much your wife likes the place, etc) becomes a pretty big factor. Also winning Cups is huge and probably tips the scale when the money is the same. All these guys should end up with more $$$$ than they know how to squander, so a ring is nice for the ego.
I am going to disagree here.

for almost all of them, $$$$ >>>

I mean, who actually thinks Gaudreau chose CBJ for the lifestyle?

re ego - I would argue the ego depends more on the $$$ than the rings

you completely missed my point....the $$$$ is the same for the top guys.

Calgary offered Johnny top dollar

He flat out said he did.
He could have gone to Philly or NJ but chose CBJ for two things

1) money. We all agree that’s primary.

2) proximity to family. He wanted to be much closer and in the same country and mentioned travel restrictions but didn’t want them over daily. So he went within a reasonable travel time.

So while money is always the motivating factor, secondary and tertiary factors often play into the final decision when there’s multiple offers.

I still don't agree. I will concede that Johnny is an exception to the general rule. And even then, he seems to have decided that he would just take the biggest number offered by a team on the Eastern seaboard.

I agree that top talent will usually have multiple offers to choose from. I still think, by far, the biggest factor in any decision though is $$$$$.

I can think of exactly two times in the past I want to say decade where a top FA has left money on the table: JT to come home; and Johnny to escape Calgary and be closer to his family. And even then, he took more money to be further from his fam than he could have (assuming the rumours about NJ are true).

isn't his family closer to NY/NJ/PHI than CBJ though?

family was enough to get him away from Canada/Calgary, but not enough to take an even bigger discount to be closer to home

I'll be clearer...top talent often means you don't have to leave money on the table, as you have multiple suitors.

It's also ironic that you concede that Johnny is an exception when in fact you're the one who initially cited him as your one example to make your point

Guys who have choices I am sure factor in multiple variables. If you are getting $10 mill from one place or $11 from another the money is moot. But those guys are few and far between

I doubt guys like Hyman and Campbell went to Edmonton for the lifestyle.

Johnny just hates Canada.
If he got 10.5 last summer from the Flames he might just have signed it. I don't blame them for not doing that, but they gave him that huge offer at the last minute. They handled how to get Huberdeau signed better.

I know Calgary fans are disappointed but the nerdies suggest they may have dodged a bullet.

His +64 plus/minus rating won't be repeated.

It's pretty funny how much praise the Flames are getting for signing a guy until he's 37 after screwing the pooch with 2 better homegrown stars.

Leafs would be getting raked for this, of course.
There was 0 talk all year about Tkachuk and Gaudreau being RFA and UFA. Yes, Dubas would be beaten silly.
Calgary only signed Tkachuk for 3 years. Humm...

Exactly. And I don’t blame him. Unannounced visits suck.

If that was true he’d have taken the eight year deal from Calgary. Money is primary but other factors apply, especially when married.

Johnny left money on the table.

Johnny is kinda both though.

He didn't take the best offer on the table cause of family (or fuck Canada, but who knows).

But he didn't take the most family friendly offer either. So even for a guy where 'family' and 'lifestyle' apparently mattered quite a bit, he took more money to be further away from his family.

And given the stories we have heard, I have a hard time he actually prefers the lifestyle in Columbus to that in NY.

Johnny is an exception to the rule, and even then, from what has been disclosed publicly, he could have taken less money to be even closer to his family but chose not to.

went from potentially:

Gaudreau 5.0gsva, ~$10m until age 36
Tkachuk 4.8gsva, ~$10m until age 32

to

Huberdeau 3.9gsva, ~$10m until age 37
Weegar 2.9gsva, $3.25m until age 28 + ???? until age ???

and getting all the love for it.

Exactly. So being in the middle tacitly proves other factors came into play.

Yup

Again, I’m glad the Habs dodged a bullet here.

I mean right up to when they trade for him in 5 years.
