OT: The Official Toronto Raptors Thread

Daniels would be a pretty sweet fit.

I would do this, and look for a quick retool around the 3 long bois. Graham is having a terrible year, but he's the rotation point guard we've needed for a while now and he's signed cheap for 2 more seasons. Daniels could easily be the point guard of the future and actually fits the long bois mold. A point guard with a 6'11 wingspan is the most Toronto Raptors thing ever. He's a work in progress offensively, but is already a well above average NBA defender.

If we go retool, here's what free agency looks like at our main positions of need. I'll keep it to attractive options that can actually make a difference in your rotation.

C: Vuc, Turner, Poeltl, Plumlee
SG: Brooks, Levert, Bogdan, Hart
PG: Clarkson

If we trade Fred for that Nola package... my wishlist is to sign Poeltl and Clarkson. Turn Gary + Boucher into a better shooting guard and let's go. Shit..if we got 2 picks out of Nola, I'd take a strong ass run at OKC for Shai right after the lottery if we weren't in Vic or Scoot territory.

-S&T Gary
-Boucher
-Whatever else they want that isn't Pascal, OG, Scottie, and Daniels (have to assume they want one of Precious or Koloko?)
-Our 1st (top 10?) + 1 other of ours (top 5 protected)
-the 2 Nola 1sts.

Sign the 2 I mentioned above...

C-Poeltl
PF-Pascal
SF-OG
SG-Shai
PG-Clarkson

6- Scottie
7- Devonte
8- Daniels

Shit, you're maybe a few rotation players short of being a fucking problem there. 2 All NBA type players, some impact swiss army knife long bois, lots of guard scoring, a very competent starting centre for a change. Young ass team too...Clarkson the only one over 29 to start the season.

That's max money or damn close in Freddy's situation anyway, so that tracks. Fred was "only" eligible for a standard max extension , 4x25% of the cap last summer. Fred was banking on one of two things I think. One likely, and one less:

Likely: Cap was going up a bunch already (112 to 123 million), so the following summer Freddy could sign a 4 yr extension for a few million more per season but also if he left Toronto, he would be eligible to sign a 4/134 on the open market.

Less: Fred was banking on making 3rd team all NBA, which would have opened up the veteran supermax option (5x35% of the cap). Now...no one was giving Fred 5/234...but it definitely would have pushed him into 5/175 territory.

So in Fred's head, he turned down 114 (that he was likely to get next summer at minimum anyway) to probably get 4/~125 but with an outside shot of 5/~175.

Is he a core piece going forward? He’s been the only guy making shots this season.

im so torn on this team. At this point of the season they are almost toast. 6th worst record in the league. They’d be pressed to make the play in at this point. Only to probably get smashed in play in or rd 1 against Boston or Milwaukee or Nets.

keep the core together? Grab that top 10 pick. Add a big man in free agency(Poeltl, Vucevic). Hope Barnes and the new pick develop to take the next step?

or trade FVV and Siakam and kick off a serious retool with Barnes as the headlining piece.

I want a better balanced roster. Better guard play. Better big man play.

Gary is probably always going to be hella streaky but he's been realgud the last while.

Good, trade him while he's peaking. Short of some sort of huge improvement in his shooting efficiency, he is what he is. An average sized SG with limited athleticism, minimal playmaking ability and creative but overall inefficient shot making.

He definitely passes the eye test when he's cooking though.

Gary isn't a core piece. It's our lack of shot making (a skill that is pretty abundant in the NBA these days) that makes him look so important to us. When he's going well, his shot making helps the Raps look like the team they should be. The answer to that though is to not get sucked into paying him 25-28 million a year, and instead to go out and get 2-3 guys who can shoot.

Maybe not a core piece but his recent play has got him back into the positives in most every advanced metric, and he's still only 23.

Watching on my IPTV and they stream what’s happening at the game during timeouts
and commercials.

Not sure anyone else saw it but Barnes had a really weird interaction with Thad Young. Young said something(inaudible) and Barnes kinda looked at him and said something then was pulled away by Koloko. It was a weird reaction to see that def wasn’t made for tv.

The look was a “what are you saying to me you’ve never been as good as me” type of look.

23 for another week or so, yeah. Remember though, being positive in the advanced metrics usually means average. 0.0 is generally a floating average and we have to decide whether we're committing money and term to that this summer.

Just to look at his EPM stuff for a moment

It's the percentile that I like to look at.

Gary being a 75-85th percentile offensive player tracks. But as does him being a ~50th percentile defender. We're now also starting to see the inability to stay healthy being a real thing with him. No catastrophic injuries, but he does get shut down for a lot of wear and tear stuff. This is his 4th full time season and he'll probably have suited up for more than 61 games in 1 of them by the end of this season.

It's not that he's bad, he's not. I just don't see him as the guy you commit money to if you're trying to build a contender.
