January 2023 Transfer Thread

The Athletic has an article about how Chelsea got to Mudryk ahead of Arsenal. The total dollars were identical. But Chelsea’s payment schedule was better and it appears the bonuses are more achievable. Chelsea also agreed to play a friendly in Donetsk when it’s safe.

Yeah, he's been a bit all over the place hasn't he? Moreno's much more ... predictable from what I can tell. Digne has been quite useful of set pieces and otherwise just erratic.
I didn't realize exactly how much Digne is on the books for. The site I'm looking at has him at 160K per week with four years left on that contract. Why on earth did we almost double his Everton salary? What horrible negotiations, he was out of favor at Everton, I can't imagine he was saying he would only transfer if we doubled his salary. He's basically unmovable since there's no way he would agree to a contract with another team for what anyone would be willing to pay. I wouldn't be surprised if the last couple years of the deal we end up loaning him out while still paying 70% of his salary like Barca was doing with Coutinho.

That's been a consistent issue since this ownership group came in. WAY too many guys all up and down the ladder are on WAY too high a wage bill and that's why Villa struggles so much to move players when it's time. I know they have to pay a premium to attract talent to Birmingham, but they've paid some patently ridiculous salaries to some truly mediocre players.

Danny Ings leaving Villa for West Ham for a £15 million fee.
This is fine for the long run because Ings really doesn't fit Emery's systems and wasn't happy with his sporadic usage. Villa once again lost significant money on what ended up being a short tenure for a well known player. But, having loaned out young Cam Archer, until Villa get 19 year old Jhon Duran a visa, they've only got one proper striker ... and whatever Leon Bailey feels like being on any given day. Ings as a backup may have been overkill, but a child and a winger backing up Watkins is almost certainly underkill.

Yeah, I have to assume this means we have our eye on another striker. If Coutinho was in any sort of form, maybe he'd be seeing more time further up the pitch, but as it stands, our options are grim. I know Ings is both overpaid and out of favor, but I kind of wish we had been able to get a little more out of a desperate west ham.

Wouldn't shock me if they simply recalled Keinan Davis from his loan at Watford to give them a bench option that isn't 19 years old. I mean, he's not doing much in the Championship but he's pretty good at the kind of holdup play that Emery's system requires. Plus, he's signed through 2024 and getting him some minutes in the Prem might boost his stock a bit. I'm sure they'd love to sell him on this summer.

Arsenal sign Brighton winger Leandro Trossard for £21 million.
Quality player who had apparently fallen out with the new manager. He's certainly more experienced than Martinelli ... I'm not sure he's actually better, but whatever.

I think that’s made a reaction to not signing Mudryk. He can also play through the middle and proved cover to Nketiah in Jesus’ absence.

Nottingham Forest sign striker Chris Wood on loan from Burnley with a conditional option to make it permanent.

He was at Newcastle, wasn't he? Either way, big strong target man. Different than Forest's other options

Yeah, the article said he had come from Burnley but he left there last January. He only had 5 goals in 39 appearances for Newcastle, after 53 in 165 appearances for Burnley.

Yeah, no shock there. Not really an Eddie Howe kind of forward. Wood is more the blunt object type.

Another signing for Arsenal, they sign center back Jakub Kiwior from Spezia in Italy.

Keith Downey, who covers NE England for Sky says that Anthony Gordon is headed from Everton to Newcastle for a £45 million fee. Medical in the next 24 hours.

Umm ... Leeds have agreed a price with Juve for USMNT stalwart (and personal fave) Weston McKennie, but Nottingham Forest are trying to hijack it at the last minute. Keep your grubby mitts off, Forest. If you deprive me of an Adams/McKinnie partnership in the Prem I will NEVER forgive you.

You just said on FB you have issue with those 3 at Leeds together... so your beef is with Aaronson then? Just curious, I'm liking any possibility of linking up top USMNT players for club too if it fits, and there's a long story why I'm semi- partial to Leeds as my mid table team in the Prem as well

No ... wrong issue. I freaking hate Leeds. Their fans are the worst and I'm old enough to remember how they acted back in the bad old days.

The reason I would look past all that stuff is if they somehow screw around and get 3 of my 4 favorite current USMNT players on the roster.

Gotcha....an old grudge :)

I don't really have skin in the game at all, 95% a neutral on it all. But I befriended a family from England while chaperoning the AFHS Band doing the Magic Kingdom parade at WDW few years back and asked their kids (while we were waiting for the parade to start, after I had finished my job getting the band ready backstage and then hustled back to main street) who their team was at home and the little girl proudly said Leeds, so I said if they'd cheer extra hard for my band when they came by, I'd cheer for Leeds if I had the chance... so that and I do like the way they play since promotion and I can watch every week.... so if they keep collecting Yanks as well, I might have to fully claim to be a supporter, lol... :) Brentford is competing lately for that 'fun scrappy underdog' place in my fandom collection though.
