Maybe just a bad example, but Liljegren has played more NHL games.

Benoit is a project pure/simple. Somebody sees a player there and believes that he can be coached.

Benoit while terrible ( i assume) represents a safer choice because he has nowhere near the skillset ( i assume) to even attempt the things Lilly can do which may lead to a mistake. Keefe will see Benoit as a safe choice

Zaitsev was a miscast #6 defender. Benoit is a 3rd pairing AHL defender who gets a sniff of the show because big, physical, knows where to stand.

But he's fucking horrible. Of all of our fringy AHL/NHL "defensive defenders" over the years......Marincin, Boosh, Ozzy, Borgman, etc, etc....this guy is easily the worst hockey player of the bunch.
